I’m trying to move away from #google.
What are your easy to use(!) favorites alternatives?
Currently I’m trying to do it like this:
#chrome -> #firefox (easy one)
Maps -> #openStreatMap (I’m trying this, maps was the most used, service for me … switch will be hard)
#gmail -> ??? (I‘m completely open, I don’t want to set up my own hosting, I’m eying mailbox.org)
fotos -> iCloud (I know it’s Apple, but obviously the poison I take for now)
#drive -> ???
Any suggestions for anything?
Thx!
@Marcel_Gehlen NextCloud instead of Drive.
@akareilly @Marcel_Gehlen
+1 for nextcloud
There is SaaS provider if you dont want to self host.
@theslik @Marcel_Gehlen
If you want it in Iceland, 1984.is is a good option.
More documentation coming soon.
@Marcel_Gehlen I’ve been using FastMail for the last 10 years. Pretty happy, but on the expensive side. The cool kids nowadays use posteo.
Search is hard, but might be possible. I have the feeling that result relevance is decreasing on google and cognitive overhead (ads) is higher recently.
A lot of organizations have NextClouds, that I use, for personal stuff I have a Synology with Tailscale and sync to backblaze.
@Marcel_Gehlen There’s a couple of maps apps based on OSM (e.g. maps.me), try Komoot, it has offline maps, but is focused on hiking/bicycle trips.
@Marcel_Gehlen @angrox has a better Synology and can probably tell you some things about the value-add things it has (Photo manager and such). Technically you don't need Tailscale to access the Syno, you can just tell it to expose itself on the internet. I guess that depends on your threat model.
@Marcel_Gehlen You can buy a Synology at any decent computer store. That will get you a box and 1-4 disks. You insert the disks and put the cover back on. You log in and tell it to use the disks and optionally to mirror the contents. There you go. The UI ok. Cloud sync (Backblaze, S3) is fairly easy to configure. Additionally a couple of clicks in the admin UI will lead to your Mac to recognize it as a backup vol. it's a consumer device, you will find it's easy.
@ofosos @Marcel_Gehlen It all depends on your requirements. I bought a DS220+ to satisfy the following: Ease to use and to operate. I use it as a NAS with no additional plugins except backup plugins (to achieve my 3-2-1 strategy, at least for my important documents)
It has some nice features to act as a gdrive and gphotos replacement. The data can be accessed from outside your homenet with a builtin feature OR (which is probably more secure) you use a VPN or a VPN Mesh like Tailscale
@ofosos @Marcel_Gehlen For the sizing: You want at least a two-bay for the hardware fault tolerance (aka RAID 1). If you have _a lot_ of data choose at least a 4 bay with an extra nvme (like the 423+). Build at least a Raid1 (2 bay) or a raid5(4 bay).
For backups I use a backup one the same synology, and three outside locations (selfhosted & blackblaze b2b)
@angrox @Marcel_Gehlen I just bought the cheapest two bay I could find. I need at least 10 days buffer if some disk fails, becuase I might be busy with something else. 3-2-1 means: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 offsite. 1 copy is on ssd, 1 copy is on hdd (synology) and 1 copy is on Backblaze (half the price of S3). It's basically hands off, I just pay $10 (usage based) to Backblaze once a month and I set the Synology to sync at night.
@angrox @Marcel_Gehlen I don't know the setup of GDrive, they're probably more advanced in the details, but this 3-2-1 strategy is something that works and probably better than 50% (or more) of the data solutions that commercial enterprises have. And it's fairly easy to implemented with consumer tech nowaways.
@ofosos @Marcel_Gehlen Neither do I know, but the data _is_ protected. Doing it yourself is far more complex but that's why gdrive is so popular. Oh, and it's free to some extends.
@angrox @Marcel_Gehlen I guess, the gist of the thing is: if you're a little data literate, setting this up in a way that is safe to use, can be done without rooting any appliance, or ssh-ing into any device. All OSes, maybe with the exception of Windows, come with a backup solution that implements best practices and in particular e2e encryption. And your upstream at home is good enough. First time in my life that all these things just fall into place. This used to be a pain.
@Marcel_Gehlen I've been researching email replacements as well and haven't found anything particularly great. I landed on #ProtonMail for now but based on my experience I would not recommend it (UI is way too slow and filtering doesn't seem to work), though other people say it's fine for them so who knows....
@Marcel_Gehlen ProtonMail instead of GMail ?
@Marcel_Gehlen@tchncs.de Maps is hard. There are OSM-based apps like @organicmaps but you won't be able to see your favourite restaurant reviews or advanced public transport navigation. It's a struggle.
About Gmail, I asked a similar question a while back, and @mailbox emerged as the winner https://social.juanlu.space/@astrojuanlu/110554471153598540 The web client is crap but you always have @thunderbird. I wish there was something closer to Hey dot com UX.
Drive - Pick a @nextcloud provider, for example @murena or https://github.com/nextcloud/providers#providers
@astrojuanlu @thunderbird @nextcloud @murena it’s only a question of time and donations/funding when you can enjoy public transport and user photos/reviews in Organic Maps.
@organicmaps @thunderbird @nextcloud @murena I'm a happy Organic Maps user :) but in September 2023 is not a full replacement. Just wanted to set clear expectations.
Are there issues I can subscribe to on GitHub about these two topics?
@astrojuanlu @thunderbird @nextcloud @murena @Marcel_Gehlen Of course. Even better if you could suggest something about the design, architecture, implementation, or maybe help us to find lead developers ;-)
@Marcel_Gehlen gmail -> protonmail
google cloud -> pcloud
@Marcel_Gehlen
Nextcloud puede reemplazar drive.
@Marcel_Gehlen Search: DuckDuckGo
Have been using it for years now, with only a handful deliberate Google searches inbetween. Works great for me!
@Marcel_Gehlen A full feature gmaps replacement is hard. For OSM I can recommend OsmAnd+ (https://apps.apple.com/de/app/osmand-maps-reise-navigation/id934850257). You get a more detailed maps and a good routing system, but without anything else gmaps features.
@Marcel_Gehlen Mailing is also a though one. There are mail providers with have a high security and data protection standard like Protonmail, mailbox.org and Posteo. If I would not selfhost my mails I would choose from those three.
And please use your own domain, then you have the flexibility to change your mail provider.
@Marcel_Gehlen Drive replacement: If you want to selfhost your filestore you can use Nextcloud. Can easily be done using docker.
Selfhosting includes that you are responsible for everything: OS, nextcloud, all the updates. Just keep this in mind.
@Marcel_Gehlen probably not what you want to hear but I use Apple’s solutions for everything
Search: Kagi
Browser: Firefox or Librewolf
Email/Calendar: Fastmail
Storage: Koofr
Notes: Notesnook
Photos: Ente
@jcrabapple @Marcel_Gehlen is it possible to selfhost koofr?
@fanta @Marcel_Gehlen no, it's hosted in Europe.
@jcrabapple @Marcel_Gehlen my Problem is, i have notes:e2ee i have photos:e2ee all selfhosted but files is missing. Any suggestions ? There is koofr and there is filen. They are open source but i cant find any documentation about selfhosting this or any other service regarding this topic
@fanta @Marcel_Gehlen hmmm I'm not sure about self hosted file storage. Never looked into it.
@fanta @Marcel_Gehlen well actually, there's Nextcloud!
@Marcel_Gehlen Schritt 1: Handy ohne Google.
Schritt 2: Openstreetmap ist super. Fürs Handy #OSMant -The best!
@Marcel_Gehlen@social.tchncs.de Hi, try this...
Maps -> Organicmaps
Gmail -> mailbox.org will be fine
Fotos/Drive -> Nextcloud (try Hetzner Drive)
Take a look at the services from dnsforge. de
@Marcel_Gehlen I got really invested with proton for email, they now also have drive and stuff. Secure and looks reliable and generally trustworthy
For email @protonprivacy or @Tutanota are great alternatives. Proton has its own drive. Another anazing drive alternative is Zoho.
