I couldn't resist and wrote about my experience on Mastodon in these 3 weeks.

@milan @NinahMarie
got the privacybadger and uBlock origin plugin too, which is the one on the right?

@haploc this is disconnect... maybe could be covered by ublock a swell - was always too lazy to find out 😁

@milan A combo of PrivacyBadger and uBlock will do the trick nicely, I think :-)

@NinahMarie Ahh, interesting! *runs page through Google translate*

@TQ Hmmm curious to find out what that will give. *runs to the page*

@NinahMarie It's not very good to read in German, but the English translation seems pretty fine.

@NinahMarie Of course, neologisms such as "toot", "tweet" and such are mistranslated hilarioulsly! πŸ˜‚

@TQ Haha, you are translating in German? I will try French and English too :D

@NinahMarie Nah, I'm reading your text in English. German was too awful to read, so many misspellings or wrong articles...

I quite enjoy it, hope it helps some more users to find their way around here!

@NinahMarie "Mijn tomaat heeft een verleden" – hahaha, tell us all about it! :D

@blinry so weird to see you toot in Dutch. Even if it's just a copy paste :D

@NinahMarie Ik begrijp (schrijf) Nederlands een beetje! πŸ˜€

@NinahMarie *doesn't understand that, clicks anyway, nods at all the foreign words, closes the tab*

Good work probably!

@frankmeeuwsen aha, ik had al zitten zoeken op nederlandse teksten/meningen maar niet veel te vinden.

@NinahMarie If you control the style of that blog, any chance you could change the font colour to something very closely resembling black?

And by "very closely resembling", I mean /black/. #000 RGB.

This is utterly unreadable.

@dredmorbius @NinahMarie at least I'm not the only person concerned by this trend (not just on this blog)

OK not such an issue for me as its interesting I am likely to cut and paste the text and print it double spaced so I can manually note difficult Dutch words/phrases, but concerned in todays TL:DR culture it might deter readers from an good article!

@vfrmedia completely agree. But what can I say ... Weebly .. and it's only my fifth post or something like that. @dredmorbius

@NinahMarie @dredmorbius
The text is grey here (and lighter than the greyish text on this Mastodon entry box).

I suspect this is trend is driven by high contrast displays on mobile phones and stylesheet designers having top range €300+ LED monitor, in properly lit "tech ateliers" not realising "normal people" have to use more modest displays (I usually get a budget of €100 for desktop workstation monitors, anything more I have to justify it)

@vfrmedia You see ... In my browsers the latest blog is Grey but the others are black. Damn you weebly ... @dredmorbius

@NinahMarie I see what is going on now, the style is changing between posts (which could be something strange weebly is doing if you aren't changing it!)
@dredmorbius

@NinahMarie @vfrmedia So: I cannot run an element inspector here, but I suspect there's also a font-weight tweek happening here.

Do. Not. Do. That.

What looks good on an Apple Retina Desktop display looks like shite ... on pretty much anything else.

#FineYoungWesternDinosaurs ello.co/dredmorbius/post/ubkid

@dredmorbius I didn't change a thing on that free weebly site but changing (in the past) all the body colors into black because I didn't like the grey... ah well ... @vfrmedia

@NinahMarie @vfrmedia Among the reasons I like Ello are that its default styling is high-contrast and readable.

On Reddit, default styling ... sucks. But I can fix it: dredmorbius.reddit.com (request desktop if on mobile).

@vfrmedia @dredmorbius @NinahMarie I remember reading a blog post about contrast ratios and the problems associated with them. It might have been this one, by @kevinmarks:

"How the Web Became Unreadable"

backchannel.com/how-the-web-be

@stefanieschulte@mastodon.cloudmy I'm a former broadcast engineer (with interests in photography/video), day job involves both selecting suitable general lighting (lamps) and setting up displays (including TV) for users who can be *any* age from teens to 80-100+

Was reading about ageing and sensitivity to light/contrast, although this declines strongly at age 75+, it starts to change in the 30s and 40s!

@dredmorbius @NinahMarie @kevinmarks

@vfrmedia @dredmorbius @NinahMarie

>Was reading about ageing and sensitivity to light/contrast, although this declines strongly at age 75+, it starts to change in the 30s and 40s!

Can confirm that it does! However, as @kevinmarks has pointed out, modern web design also makes us /feel/ older (e. g. through low contrast). πŸ™„

@kevinmarks
@dredmorbius
🎩 - can use these resources for work as well; also reassuring to know I am *not* ageing prematurely (this last being source of angst given my current line of work!)

@stefanieschulte @NinahMarie

@vfrmedia @dredmorbius @NinahMarie that is true, but it is also very dependent on environment. (he said, squinting at his laptop in bright sunshine)

@stefanieschulte @kevinmarks @NinahMarie @dredmorbius @vfrmedia

Read this a while ago; utterly, utterly, utterly DESPISE what is happening w websites & thought it just a fashion trend. I didn't realise there was a 'bible' of thought behind it.

Since then have been complaining/explaining on sites that I use regularly (or that I would *like* to use). It hasn't helped (yet), but I keep trying. 😠

@s_evansUP

Alas, what often happens is site admins often get limited choice of CSS themes as part of the underlying software.

Without the tech knowledge many are wary to alter the CSS themes (even if possible) for fear of making site look ugly or rendering it unusable.

if they complain to s/w devs esp if FOSS they are told "fix it yourself/use something else"

@stefanieschulte @kevinmarks @NinahMarie @dredmorbius

@vfrmedia @stefanieschulte @kevinmarks @NinahMarie @dredmorbius

*bleah* But this is such a little detail (to change) with such enormous ramifications!

It's no good if a site *looks* pretty if so many can't *read* it!

(I'm not yelling at *you* πŸ˜„ - just frustrated in general! )

@s_evansUP

totally agree - recently a popular site I use (where most users are young, have good eyesight and admin is very clued up tech wise) is *still* affected by this issue.

No one wants it to be this way but the admin has a demanding day job, there are only short time windows for experimenting with changes, and these days mistakes *can* affect other core functionality..

@stefanieschulte @kevinmarks @NinahMarie @dredmorbius

@NinahMarie

at least you have not locked down the content against right clicking to copy and paste to some more readable format that would be 😁

@s_evansUP @stefanieschulte @kevinmarks @dredmorbius

@NinahMarie @vfrmedia @dredmorbius @kevinmarks @s_evansUP Well, people have simply used this as an opportunity to exchange links about web design and contrast (and I've learned a lot in the process)! Nothing wrong with this, I think...

On other platforms, such debates might look quite different (and less pleasant)!

@stefanieschulte I didn't say I didn't like it. ;) And I'm still reading in the links of the conversation. @vfrmedia @dredmorbius @kevinmarks @s_evansUP
