Lots of people talking about the care required to select a #mastodon instance that suits your values and priorities — which I *completely* agree with — but not so many recognising how difficult it is to operate any service with even just a few hundred users, without downtime, being responsive to their technical needs and expectations (which in reality means 24/7 on call), not to mention adequate funding, etc. I expect some instances will crumble in the long term. #Ops is hard, yo.
@frankiesaxx If you like your admin, make them a nice front page that mirrors your community values1
@NeuroWinter @ajbw "Why do you look so stressed? Everything is working!" -A user I almost murdered.
@NeuroWinter exactly!
@ajbw This is why I'm trying to make a "patreon roundup", which will also feature other means of support than just patreon.
For as many servers as will provide me the information. (even non-mastodon)
@ajbw
Well written services go a long way to reducing the "care and feeding" requirements of your admin. we will see where Mastodon falls on the continuum.
@ajbw need a pool of volunteer admins or crowd funding to get scalability happing. pool our resources for the good of the fediverse
@ajbw also: in the short term
@nyquildotorg haha true. I was trying to be optimistic 😂
. @ajbw Yeah, there's a lot of talk about what admins should do to serve the user base but maybe users also need to adjust to not being customers, but community members and not treat the admin like service workers; maybe we could support our individual instances by being chill about maintenance, chipping in a couple bucks, and generally not being assholes to the people organizing the party the party the rest of us are enjoying. #wecanhavenicethings
