general 13th doctor who feelings

I think mid-second season of her run is about time for me to put out my feelings on this new doctor and show running. I'm enjoying it. The show feels like it's at a better pace, I'm a lot less frustrated than the almost constant cliffhangers from the show's history. It hasn't felt like any of the stories have been weak. I like that it's been set around Earth a lot yet remained plenty interesting still. I like seeing more brown people.

Overall, the show feels a lot more grounded. The 13th doctor is cool. It's been so long since there's been a doctor without constant angst or HUGE DARK SIDE. Instead of having huge universe plots, a lot of it is centering around personal plots and I really like that.

Though, 'it's a better show' isn't really a great endorsement. I don't think I would suggest anyone watch Doctor Who, and that kind of sucks. The formula is repetitive, the world building isn't great and its infinite run time means there's no stakes at all.

this season the big arc is that the master destroyed galifrey because reasons, and it's REALLY hard to care AT ALL about it because the doctor doesn't even fucking go to galifrey ever EVEN AFTER SAVING IT FROM ITS LAST DESTRUCTION and obviously galifrey is going to come back nothing in doctor who really changes that much

now if you compare this to last season's arc - a big bad guy killed graham's wife and graham wants revenge, last season's despite being less interesting in theory is MUCH more exciting because nobody knows what will happen to graham or how his character progresses. maybe he might leave? maybe he might forgive the bad guy?

everything the doctor does is uninteresting to me because the doctor is immortal and always ready to be up for adventure. you can't do the soap opera equivalent of putting the doctor on a bus then coming back all changed, the doctor has to be in every episode and do things to forward the plot or the show just doesn't work

this is probably part of the reason the steven mofatt series was so lame to me: it was all about the doctor, the one thing in the show that can't change at all. multiple times he was like 'oh no the doctor dies in this episode' and shows the doctor being dead or killed and i'm just thinking 'what is the actual point here you're making a plot about something EVERYONE knows is going to resolve itself'

galifrey was destroyed in like 2005 when the show rebooted, the doctor was sad about this for a long time, then it came back and we visited it once in 2015 and suddenly the doctor has better shit to do up until the master, what? arsons it?

SPOILERS doctor who LOTS OF SPOILERS

it's seriously mixed messages to get 'GALIFREY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE PAST DECADE' followed by one visit then the doctor just not noticing it's on fire and not getting any kind of cloister bell or email/fax about this even as PROFESSIONAL GALIFREY SAVER

like if the doctor doesn't care why should i care

for context, possibly the most interesting episode i've seen in like the past 5 years of doctor who is the mondasian cyberman part 1 episode, because it introduced like the horrifying concept of a new breed of cyberman

but then they turned in to old cyberman that look just like cyberman from a parallel universe
