it would be cool to run a mastodon instance on a raspberry pi

@joonian The SDCard would die in a week or lees ;-)

@joonian @lord You could run some network storage or a USB hard disk off to the side! I wonder how it would handle full federation.

@golero @LordK1 so it's basically not possible? just an instance for myself. i guess downside is my fed timeline would suck? maybe it could be used for sensitive info like DMs or whatever that i want to keep secure.

@joonian I wonder how many users you could reasonably support.

@joonian I think @Mabande said something about seeing someone running it on a Raspberry Pi

@joonian Sell Raspberry Pi units with Mastodon already installed for use by families/organizations. Current install process is too complicated. Small market though, esp after established players get bigger.

@msittig ya totally niche. so heres a q -- what's the incentive for a big player to host a mastodon instance for, say, 100s of thousands of users? what do they get out of it?

@joonian my best guess, they'd probably just copy Twitter -- advertising, sponsorships, cooperation with media orgs -- to stay viable as costs grow. And for small orgs, Slack or Discord might be a better fit. So... nothing new, really?

@msittig unless each instance organically reaches a limit of ~40,50k users or something and can live selling ancillary services or donations?
