I did write some software to color-correct and convert C41 negatives, and I was surprised that simply inverting and normalizing in RGB-space gave a very good result. Not a hand-tweaked perfect result, but definitely 90% there. Of course, Kodak's color scientists may have tweaked their chemistry to make later processing (either RA4 or digital) easier.
