Now, I'm not a trained aerial photo analyst, but these fighter jets at the -2 airbase somehow don't seem quite so daunting. Strange, why do I only have to think of when I look at these pictures?

Here's a P68TC probably performing an aerial survey for digital . That's at least one of the use cases listed by the manufacturer and what the pattern suggests. (Stripes flown in opposite directions are typical for that.)
