wiuwiu.de XMPP seems to quit its service at the end of the month. Obviously there has not been an official, public announcement, yet, but their users have been informed via XMPP messages.
If you're looking for another XMPP service, trashserver.net is happy to serve you.
For registration, send an email to: xmpp@trashserver.net and I'll create an account for you.
@trashserver Is this true (wiuwiu.de shutting down its services)? I also received the message, but I considered it a scam
Does anyone know about a public (and reliable) confirmation? Are there wiuwiu users *not* getting a message about XMPP service shutdown?
@aardjon
Who send that message?
XMPP is resistant against Sender spoofing. If the message came from the known admin / service address or from the address of the server itself, it is legit. If not... Then maybe not.
@trashserver
@Menel @aardjon @trashserver Indeed the message came from sebastian@wiuwiu.de instead of the usual wiuwiu.de for public announcements. But I'm pretty certain I remember sebastian@wiuwiu.de to be the admin. Another indication is that the registrations have been closed now.
@uexo @Menel @trashserver Yes, Sebastian is the admin's name, but there is no official admin/support XMPP address given on the web site. Other service announcements like the annual survey always came from the server address directly. Registrations were already closed some weeks before. The message also announced the shutdown of all other services (what about the paid services?), but the web site still promotes them. I think I will call or mail Sebastian directly for clarification.
@aardjon
I did write a mail too, explaining the confusion and asking to update the website.
@uexo @trashserver
@uexo @Menel @trashserver I got an answer from the admin (Sebastian), confirming that he sent this message, and that all wiuwiu.de services *including the paid ones* are going to shut down at the end of October. So my assumption was wrong, this was *not* a scam. Thank you all for your answers and also @trashserver for bringing this up at all
Please excuse me for spreading uncertainty!
Going to search for XMPP services now
#wiuwiu #wiuwiushutdown #xmpp
@aardjon @Menel @trashserver There is a good list of public XMPP services at https://providers.xmpp.net/
Self-hosting is also a lot of fun. You can have a chat address equals to your email address and you are the only one that can shut down your service ;)
@uexo @Menel @trashserver Thank you very much for the link, I didn't know this list . Especially the "bus factor" thing is sometimes hard to determine!
I'd really like to host XMPP myself just to learn something, but it's a matter of free time and money. Also, I'd like to recommend a reliable and hopefully longer-lasting service to some of my contacts (before they start to dislike XMPP because of repeated service shutdowns).
@Menel @aardjon @trashserver the message definitely came from the Admin, so yeah no spam
