#cyclists : when replacing a
chain, don't do what I did and misthread the chain through the derailleur. It should go under the top pulley but *above* the metal bit below it !
At least I had the sense to only test the #bike near to home, I did think it was unusually noisy, and so swiftly turned back and corrected this.
Still getting sklips on 11t cog if pedalling hard so alas, the cassette may need replacing, but I rarely use that gear anyway (hard on knees, I got an ebike to avoid that!)
@vfrmedia your bottle looks like a magic potion! and yay for helpful pic descriptions! \o/
@distel TBH it had been sat around in the house for a while: too small a bottle for me to remember to take it to glass recycling (over here this is in supermarket car park, not with normal containers), I didn't want to contaminate empty salad dressing bottles (that *do* go in council recycling) with mineral oil, and it is just right shape and size!
I will put a warning to myself on it not to reuse for any food product (mineral oil won't kill you, but you will spend a lot of time at the WC 🚾 )
@vfrmedia You use mineral oil for brake fluid on bikes? Guess that makes sense - wonder why we use such toxic stuff for motorcycles and cars.
@amphetamine @gbrnt curiously the oil I used (recommended by the bike shop) is type LHM (Liquide Hydraulique Minéral) also used for Citroën, Rolls Royce/Bentley and various other European motor cars (not sure if it is for just the power steering or brakes or both of these things..)
@vfrmedia @amphetamine @gbrnt It's used for *suspension* (it's hydropneumatic) as well as power steering on those cars, in addition to braking.
As far as why glycol brake fluids are a thing... AFAIK, less compressibility, and being hygroscopic means that their degradation in high temperature performance is more gradual than mineral oil (which ends up having pockets of straight water as water gets in the system).
@vfrmedia he he, i've done that once.... cut a nice groove in the derailleur before i noticed.
i didn't have the components to break and reattach the chain with me, and ended up just taking the derailleur apart to rethread it, but at least it was a relatively beefy 8 speed chain and kept working pretty okay once that was resolved. 😅
@gdkar what made me feel particularly daft is that the error had been staring me in the face for an entire day, as I didn't ride the bike on Saturday (but still checked the drivetrain) and I'd tried not to rush things..
At some point I should treat myself to a proper workstand (I end up doing my own maintenance as in my region many LBS mechanics still look upon e-bikes like you are bringing in a spacecraft 😆 )
@vfrmedia happened to me as well and funnily my bike garage also didn’t notice it right away once I came up to him and asked what could be wrong ^^
I also learned how to bleed the disc brakes, you must pay attention to all open ports being totally upright (or more air gets in), sometimes the caliper must be taken off for this (and you put a block into it to keep the pistons in correct position).
Unfortunately no pics of actual syringes/hoses as my hands were by now full with mineral oil and I didn't want it also on my mobile phone!
The brakes also need new pads soon so those are on order for tomorrow..
