Thinking to myself this morning “Threads can’t be as bad as I recall…”

First post in my feed: Instagram influencer with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise from her balcony in a $1000/night hotel built with slave labor in a country where women can’t drive, telling me about how she has discovered that the secret to life is learning to savor the little things.

No, lady, apparently the secret to life is to be born rich, white, beautiful, and oblivious.

Anyway, that’s enough Threads for 2024.

I suspect the "anti-covid disinformation" part of the algorithm is being used to hide any "bad news" (such as in depth discussions about the environment or politics) and push this bullshit "feel good" type of post..

@vfrmedia @ct_bergstrom I don’t know. I see a lot of very angry, and very unproductive, political-ish trash on my feed.

or they are boosting all the right wing staff like X (I did see a claim that some folk were deliberately going to Threads because Mastodon generally swings very left wing)

@vfrmedia @o_simardcasanova @ct_bergstrom does it not just swing the way users want it to by their choice of who to follow?

@CloudyMrs @o_simardcasanova @ct_bergstrom

The non-Meta Fediverse does work in exactly this way, but Threads/X and other commercial networks use opaque algorithms intended to serve their advertisers by providing segments of people that can be easily marketed to..

@vfrmedia @o_simardcasanova @ct_bergstrom I know. That's my point. If folk don't like what they're seeing on here, they can do their own tailoring.

@CloudyMrs @o_simardcasanova @ct_bergstrom

when/if more Threads posts start appearing on Fediverse is where the boundaries (of what "here" is) could get blurred, but there are at least many instances which actively reject Threads traffic so hopefully some users realise they are missing a ton of stuff (or that there are ads/sponsored posts on their feeds which don't appear on the original Fediverse..)

@vfrmedia @ct_bergstrom I have seen trashy political posts from across the board on my feed

I don't think it's plausible to think that Meta has some grand plan at the moment. It's more likely some sort of incompetence, especially considering that it wasn't like that a few weeks ago.

@vfrmedia @ct_bergstrom They changed something recently, not sure what, but the quality of the feed started to massively decrease for me and for many more users 10-ish days ago

Before that, my algorithmic feed was actually useful, showing that algorithmic feeds aren't inherently bad
