The caveat of making free and open source software on Android is that if your application is good, there is someone who's going to take the code, change the branding, add advertisements to it and profit off of it. It happens literally everytime and Google is barely doing anything about this.
So yeah I understand why most Android devs are reluctant to release their code
F-Droid has nice apps though
@Siphonay I found a decent ad-free barcode reader on there, but the cycling/mapping apps I tried don't work on the cheap old Huawei I wanted to use them with (the "bikephone" is always a cheap one in case it springs loose from the mount and hits the deck hard, which is always a risk with the UK's poor road surfaces).
As for the other issue, its also a good reason for devs to maintain an website independent of Google, so they can confirm which is the legit version...
