Neat. The upcoming v0.19.0 version of #GoToSocial will get 2FA!

@mattie we'll see. Her #gotosocial instance is pretty great, despite the lewdy nature of the domain name.
..aaaaand back.
Live from #GoToSocial 0.19.0-rc1.
I suspect there will be 2-3 release candidates for GoToSocial 0.19 until we have a final release so not jumping straight on it. But 2FA and Token review are cool features to have.
#gotosocial
Hello, we just created the first release candidate for version 0.19.0 of #GoToSocial:
https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.19.0-rc1
Adventurous admins can try out this release candidate using the 0.19.0-rc1
docker tag, or by downloading the proper tar archive on the release page.
This version contains several database migrations so you will need to be patient when upgrading, and backup your database first!!

read

etc) now actually do stuff! So we removed the big "scopes don't do stuff!" warning in the docs. The enforced scopes match the Mastodon API token scopes, so there shouldn't be any surprises for bot owners / app developers. Thanks for reading! :)
IPv6‐ссылка не стала кликабельной, ну да ладно.
I have to say, 98% of me being confronted with spam in the Fediverse is other people talking about it. This comes down to excellent moderation of my old main account. But what delights me even more is how quiet it is on my own private server, with no moderation at all.
Of course this is a really small account and everything, but if you don't enable open sign-ups and require to approve follow requests, a big part of the problem is covered.
I see people complaining -- and guess what? 9 out of 10 are on mastodon.social. I totally get that not everyone wants or is able to host their own server. That's fine. But if you're joining the Fediverse on mastodon.social, then complain that Mastodon or even the Fediverse is bad because of spam, without every trying another server, you kinda missed the point.
@dominic aw thank you for your message Dominic. Like a book indeed - it's been less than 150 days but it feels like a lifetime with all the services I tried out and the things I have learned
I expressed an interest in self-hosting and I think it was @ilja who first recommended #YunoHost in November. The following month I got a VPS, installed YH in less than 5 minutes, and everything just worked...
I am on Mastodon already @_elena and I was hesitating between installing #Friendica and #Sharkey. But people recommended #GoToSocial because it's really lightweight and features-packed. That's what I did - and I'm very happy about it.
#GoToSocial のいいところは、以前の投稿がインポートできるところなんだよね。これはかなり大きいと思う

@elena hello to you. I begun to read all your posts from the beginning in your #GoToSocial self-hosted. Its like reading a book !
I self-host myself my blog and two other web apps with a web panel called #Webuzo. It use Softaculous to install apps. But I think to host my own Federated social app. And this panel doesn't support any ActivityPub apps. I already explored #Yunohost. Interesting to read your experience about it.
Why did you decide to use GtS instead Mastodon ?
For the next few days, I'll mostly post to this #GoToSocial account and then share it from my old @ajsadauskas Vivaldi Social account.
At this stage, I mostly just want to see there aren't any nasty surprises when I use GtS regularly. I'm also waiting the seven days for the BlueSky bridge to start working.
Once it does, I'll move everything over to this account.
A bit of an unusual tutorial on #GoToSocial today. It’s an interesting project so there is a lot of explainer mixed in while I waited for the accounts to migrate.
GTS gives you this preview of a future when move command is in the AP spec and you can migrate any account into any other account.

I love it when people ask. XD
I am:
So, I almost never post videos, and when I post pictures, I either post as very compressed #WebP (not my favorite image format, but it's the best format for low-fidelity/high-compression images that #GoToSocial supports), or "lossy"-compressed PNGs.
I have a utility on my phone (Image Toolbox) that can reduce PNG files by reducing the number of colors, but it's not great at picking the colors.
When I have the time and presence of mind to do so, I will take the PNG into GIMP and either use its conversion function to reduce the number of colors (to something like 32 or maybe 64, possibly as low as 4 or 8), or (like in the above case) I'll actually hand-select the important colors in the image and tell GIMP to reduce the image to just those colors.
In this case, the original screenshot PNG was 83KiB, which I managed to bring down to 16KiB through the manual color reduction process (down to just 6 colors).
If you peruse the #LossyPNG hashtag, there are plenty of examples. Some are obviously reduced (and are reminiscent of graphics on 16 bit machines like the #Amiga or #AtariST), but some look quite good for how severely reduced they were.

How to Migrate a Mastodon Account to GoToSocial
This #GoToSocial account has become a step-by-step tutorial in how to self-host the publishing platform #Ghost (and troubleshoot issues)
If you're not interested in my messages on the subject, I will be using a new hashtag #EleSelfHostsGhost so you can just mute it.
I'm a little late to the party because everything is now set-up and running smoothly: I manually installed Ghost on my Ubuntu VPS
I imported all the old posts and media: https://news.elenarossini.com
I installed #Apache to use #Varnish cache and changed the cache's maxAge so that a bit of traffic wouldn't overwhelm my VPS
I published and shared on Mastodon a new blog post: https://news.elenarossini.com/what-im-up-to-march-april-2025-edition/ Thanks to Varnish and the maxAge cache tweak, the VPS withstood the "Mastodon stampede" (the post had made it to Explore!)
So far so good.
but when I tried to send that blog post as a newsletter to just 210 people, #Mailgun immediately flagged me as a spammer and froze my account
It took about 48 hours of back-and-forth emails with the Mailgun team to convince them I'm not a spammer and to get my account reinstated.
Now, why am I sharing all this?
In case you are also tempted to self-host Ghost, I found that the official Ghost - Mailgun documentation has little information available. But I discovered this super helpful post in the Ghost Forums and I will be trying this tweak to see if it makes a difference:
https://forum.ghost.org/t/unable-to-send-newsletter-with-correct-mailgun-api-keys/34186/6
And yes, I'm aware that if you sign up for my newsletter you will get an email with a warning "this message failed the domain authentication" (or something along these lines). Problem is, when I implemented a tweak, changing config settings, the alert went away but I saw a spike in activity in my Dashboard, as if I had sent 600 emails (I did not). For now I can live with the warning.
I appreciate Ghost's new implementation of a spam filter because around the same time I got really suspicious signups originating from the same domain.
Anyway after I change all this I will try to send once again my blog post as a newsletter.
Special thanks to my parents for looking after my little one so I can do all this while she's on a school vacation
Something interesting I've noticed about #GoToSocial
I've tried to add a few Threads accounts just to test it out, and it doesn't seem to work.
The BlueSky Bridge? Yup.
Flipboard? Yup.
Threads? Can't seem to find them.
I'm just curious: Is it something with my setup? Or is Threads not compatible with GtS?
(Given Zuckerberg's actions over the past few decades, not being visible on Threads is not necessarily a bad thing. Just curious to know?)
Today I used #GoToSocial's reply-approval for the first time. It felt good.
