Sometimes it hums loudly, giving it a little shove fixes that, but it's not an actual compressor issue, just vibration from standing not quite level.Power consumption isn't outrageous either, 19 kWh in a month. No side access exists (which would be ideal).The lifehack? Elevate the fridge on 2x4s to clean it. (I used 4 basically square 2x4x4 blocks) Now you have marginal side access to get a brush in and clearance on the bottom to vacuum out the resulting dust that falls.How do you lift a fridge you ask?This lever works great. Roll the fridge out straight and use the lever to lift each corner and place the blocks. Didn't even empty the fridge - start with front corners so stuff inside tilts back.I think this was about $20.00 when we bought it years ago.

But in this case the old refrigerator (which was in our home when we moved here 17 years ago) was using an absurd amount of electricity. Chuck DarwinGE installs an RFID reader in the fridge next to where the water filter is installed. If it does not detect a GE-brand filter, the water/ice dispenser refuses to function. It's essentially a form a <a href="https://c.im/tags/DRM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DRM</a> for refrigerators. The GE filters retail for $50 each. Third-party filters (which would be fully compatible if not for lacking the RFID chip) go for around $12. That the manufacturer restricts the use of third-party filters is not advertised and not disclosed prior to purchase. (Had it been, I obviously wouldn't have bought the fridge.) I realize this probably seems a little petty, but the surprise requirement for $50 filters adds $500 to the cost of ownership over five years. Do I have any recourse against GE here? Or is this just another life lesson that you can't take anything at all for granted these days?Edit: I should point out that the off-brand RPWF filters are proven to be physically compatible with the fridge. There's a workaround where you can take the RFID chip off a bypass filter and tape it to the reader inside the fridge. The existing built in fridge has been there for the 16 years that we've lived here, and who knows how long before. It's awful: The internal temperature fluctuates between freezing and 8 C and it guzzles electricity - measurement suggests ~500 kWh per year.For some reason all new built in fridges still have high energy usage, so we're only looking at free-standing models.Most fridge/freezer combi models are absurdly large. It's a stretch to reach the top shelf inside.All the A-rated refrigerators are huge and have apps.
