🪷 #Solstice #Brumalia #Saturnalia: December 24th is the end of the four-week Ancient Roman #Brumalia winter solstice festival honouring #Saturn/#Cronus and #Ceres/#Demeter. The Brumalia festival included night-time feasting and merriment. During this time, oracles were taken. Brumalia festivities ended on 24 Dec, ushering in the Saturnalia and the "Waxing of the Light". (Our photo shows a festively decorated Antinous bust by #SandraGore which she calls the "Ghost of Christmas Present.") 🪷

I didn't want to be haunted by the Ghost of #Saturnalia Present tonight, so I made a small dulcia piperata. Sadly, it did not rise like I wanted, but I did my best.

All historical ingredients: spelt flour, olive oil, honey, cardamon, black pepper, sourdough starter, and salt. I don't have any pine nuts or hazelnuts to top it with, but I'll manage something.

It's the #DayOfHelios / Sol's Day / #Sunday! ☀️

Last night was the longest night of the year in Greece, so #Helios had his shortest work day.

"At the winter solstice, the sun would seem to be a little child like that which the Egyptians bring forth from a shrine on the appointed day, since the day is then at its shortest and the god is accordingly shown as a tiny infant."

I usually bake an ancient Roman cake for #Saturnalia, like dulcia piperata, or at least some globi. This year, I did not. I didn't forget. I just didn't feel like it.

Unfortunately, now I can't sleep. I'm being haunted by what I guess is the Ghost of Saturnalia Past. I can't be sure. It only speaks Classical Latin, and I can't understand a word of it.

P.s. Instead of saying "boo", this ghost says "iö". Iöooooo, Saturnaliaaaaa. Iöoooooo.

Solstice came early ~ Happy reason for the season - welcome, Winter! We respect you & have prepared for you with appropriate celebration & feasts (Saturnalia). Let us survive these shortest days of the year, and count the weeks 'til Spring.
