#AI #crawlers 🤖 🦠 brought our server down again. We stopped counting the downtime in the last half a year. In our first 4 years of #selfhosting we had cca 2 days of downtime per year, longest one we had was when the internet cable was cut near our server location.

Then the robots sniffed out our git forge and the it doesn't handle the traffic.Whole server stops until someone restarts it.We blocked whole subnets from #Microsoft,#Amazon &#Meta at the start of 2025. It did not help for a long. 😿

Okay, call me crazy (you might be right...) but I'm pretty excited about this. I'm looking at self hosting my own jellyfin chromecast receiver.

When you cast video, the actual webapp that loads inside your tv is hosted somewhere on the internet (it's not a built-in component running from your local jellyfin install) because it's gotta be internet facing and registered with Google (it's a whole thing for chromecast receivers in general.)

It's actually remarkably straightforward to setup a local instance of this receiver, it's just a nodejs app that'll need a HTTPS endpoint.

Next step is I need to register a new cast app and add it into my local jellyfin instance and I should be able to get it working in our tv... To what end, I hear you ask? I wanna get some kind of logging/monitoring set up so I can diagnose an issue I've been having the last week or so 🤣 I'm hoping to integrate OpenTelemetry 🔭

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of being asked to join Paul Cutler and Tod Kurt on their podcast, The Bootloader.

I’ve been an avid follower of The Bootloader since it began. In my opinion, it is a perfect 30 minute format: each participant gets to bring some “picks” to talk about (mostly in the tech / software / hardware / maker space), for no more than 5 minutes – so you get to hear about six things of interest, that you may not have come across before, and learn something cool about the thing and the host or guest. You either get a Paul/Tod double-header with three picks each, or they bring on a guest, and each person picks two things. I always discover something new through listening to this show! I was surprised and delighted that Paul and Tod asked me to join them for this episode – compared to them, I am a mere amateur when it comes to making cool electronics and such.

You can listen to the show via multiple channels – like our own Games at Work.biz podcast, there’s a YouTube version, but it is audio-only (nice work YouTube for forcing everyone into that weird system). The show notes are also extensive, as they more-or-less cover a linkified transcript of what we talked about.

The YouTube edition may be a bit strange for an audio show… but gives me an opportunity to embed it here, so if you feel like it, click away!

So, what did I pick?

Oh, you don’t want to watch listen? Well, that’s a bit sad. OK, here are my picks:

  1. Glance
I recently came across Glance, an easy-to-configure self-hosted dashboard that lets me arrange information, feeds and data into a useful start page for my life and interests. It is nice and straightforward, pretty easy to extend, and has a friendly community. Worth taking a look!
  2. MNT Pocket Reform / MNT Research
I’ve written a few times about my MNT Pocket Reform, and after a recent spell where I had to get something looked at under warranty and didn’t have it with me, it came back just before we recorded the podcast episode. Again, I really wanted to share something that has a fantastic community, and in this case also a company (and people) with great principles behind it. So, I took the opportunity to give them a shout-out!

I hope you take a listen to The Bootloader, and maybe even get interested enough to check out their back catalogue of episodes and add it to your podcast app for new ones!

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 128 (a bit Clueless edition) 🎬

Bonjour Fedi friends!

I'm having a really interesting week: 4 adult caretakers in a house with 3 little children... as I admitted to someone on here, self-hosting is FAR easier than being a referee in fights about LEGOs 😅

Now, whenever the cousins are busy playing in the garden, I try to do a bit of work, namely: figuring out #PeerTube from the POV of a self-hoster.

Yesterday I finally understood how I could create a user account (other than "root" - the superuser created during the PeerTube installation).

Today I'm busy trying to solve another problem: how do you tell your followers you've moved to a new instance? Because yes, PeerTube is powered by #ActivityPub, but it doesn't support the MOVE function.

I rarely posted on my MakerTube account and only have 150 subscribers, who followed me when reading about it on my blog post about PeerTube.

But I have to admit, the whole "following" thing is really convoluted on PeerTube because you can follow an entire account or specific channels. And I'm a little lost regarding how I notify my followers about the change.

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!

Oh and some news for you first... here is my new PeerTube home: https://videos.elenarossini.com/a/ele/video-channels

Special thanks to :YunoHost:

Hallo und willkommen auf meinem Profil!

Seit Anfang 2025 bin ich nun auch im Fediverse aktiv und schaue mich erstmal um, was es hier alles zu entdecken gibt. So Einiges befindet sich ja quasi noch "im Aufbau". Gleichzeitig hoffe ich, mein Umfeld für die Alternativen zu facebook & Co begeistern zu können. Mal schauen, wie das so klappt?
