This is quite unlike Helsinki’s first city bike system 2000–2010, that was the same as in Copenhagen.

These were some cursed clunkers, plastic bearings in the hubs and massive rubber tires. You used them with a 2€ deposit, like a shopping cart.
Quite a few met an untimely end at the bottom of Helsinki’s many waterways.

I saw folks in yellow vests testing what I presume to be new candidate city bikes for Helsinki. Apparently the plan is to replace the successful ”Alepa” bikes when the 2026 season opens, a year from now. Some of the bikes were e-assist. Even considering ebikes has been criticised by some, but is popular e.g. in Madrid. Lahti also has ebikes.

Crappy photo, but would seem there are 8 candidates at this stage (you can see that C1 and C2 are different bikes).

A friend recently told me about cycling while female. When she overtakes men it is apparently not uncommon for them to yell something dumb or start pedaling like mad to keep up, or even create dangerous situations in their eagerness to overtake her again. Sounds exhausting.

Cyclists laud new pedestrian crossing button that changes the lights more quickly if you push it more

"We thought, people who are happy to sit and wait will just push the button once, but with this new design people who are in a hurry can push the button multiple times to get the light to change sooner", said traffic engineer Ncevy Sbby. "It will be a real time saver for everyone."

Today I decided to do an unusual combination: cycle to the parking house.

I regret to inform you that the "10 minutes" trip took more than half an hour, beating the actual drive through all the traffic jams on A3. Reason? #Düsseldorf hates cyclists.

Also, a heads-up: radservice.radroutenplaner.nrw is generally great, but it doesn't take even long-term closures in account, let alone the usual "we just blocked the entire cycling path with no hint on where you go now".

I've moved over from mastodon.design, so it's time for another #introduction toot!

Hey, I'm Toni 👋

I’m a software designer, though I’m spending more and more time writing code, mostly in #swiftui and #react

When I'm not heads down at work, you'll catch me #cycling, eating my weight in oranges, walking with my #schnauzer named Xenon, or just getting lost in a new #book, #anime, or #manga.

I’m also a passionate #yugioh collector, #nba fan and I play #guitar occasionally.

A great history episode of the Yarra BUG radio show, talking about the history of Bicycle User Groups in Victoria. Including a shout out to the Port Melbourne group.

Paul McKay says that it was important to get early wins, to keep the energy up.

The Port Phillip Bicycle User Group has had 2 incarnations: it re-booted in the 2010s, under the much missed Georgie Fyfe-Jamison.

The BUGs were set up by the Bicycle Institute (precursor org to Bicycle Network), but then "voted off the island" (divested from BN) in the early 2000s. In recent years we've begun to work more closely with BN.

A really interesting show, worth a listen!

Good morning.
Cycling to work and a swim in the lake on the way. Air 0°C, water ~7°C, Bise (a cold, dry wind).
Finally, I could see the mountains again.

Guten Morgen.
Mit dem Velo zur Arbeit und unterwegs ein Bad im See. Luft 0°C, Wasser ~7°C, Bise.
Endlich zeigen sich die Berge mal wieder.
