Dreams of environmental redemption: Reanimate the thylacine

"Perhaps we want an iconic marsupial we can walk on a lead to our local brunch spot."

"Certainly we are not up to the job: we have no experience in making thylacines happy. We have restructured the habitat where the tiger lived, decimated its prey, destroyed its culture. We have built a lot of roads: if everything goes very well and thylacines become as common as pademelons, we can look forward to seeing one on our morning commute, smeared across the highway by a logging truck."

"More likely we are hoping for something to erase our guilt, not just for the extinction of this animal (we could blame someone else for that) but for all the extinctions to come. More likely we want to feel that the damage we do isn’t permanent, that we can travel back in time." Jane Rawson

Greater gliders' spectacular recovery after bushfires abc.net.au/news/2025-03-04/gre

"Endangered #GreaterGliders in part of the southern #BlueMountains have made a spectacular recovery after the black summer #bushfires in 2019-20... the #marsupials' numbers are 45% higher than were before the fires began in 2019... Greater gliders are like #koalas. They feed exclusively on #eucalypt foliage... there's been a lot of new eucalypt foliage for them to feed on"

Koala interactions, affection between young male koalas

"Three males engaging in unexpected “affiliative” behaviours. They were grooming each other, sniffing each other’s genitals and vocalising to each other in soft, high-pitched calls, similar to the sounds baby koalas make... High density means the home ranges of koalas are more likely to overlap and their interactions will be more frequent. It also means competition for food, space and mates can be especially high. " >>

"The species was almost hunted to extinction...They used to skin them alive and put them back up the tree with no fur." >>
