Trevor<p>At Beau Vista Orchards we tend to the grass sward with Shropshire sheep so no need for pesticides and herbicides. Shropshires are great as they rarely harm the standard trees. Smbsy<p>I'd like to find some companion plants for apple and plum trees.</p><p>UK native/naturalised species that can go under apples and plums. Provide a bit of cover, and reduce competition for the fruit trees from other plants.</p><p>More edible stuff would be nice. Minimal/easy maintenance for a small volunteer team. Old Hippie Ⓥ Resistance!<p>We have been doom and glooming for the last week and I've finally said fuck it. Although I don't yet know what the solution is, we're not running away. We'll do something. </p><p>In this new spirit, I am going to add more <a href="https://veganism.social/tags/walnutTrees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walnutTrees</span></a> across the road from my main orchard. This is obviously not a political action but it is forward motion. Trevor<p>Another bird we increasingly see at Beau Vista orchard is the Kererū or native NZ wood pigeon. Considered a taonga or treasure to Māori, the kererū was historically a major food source in Māori culture being a big bird. However, due to the decline in its population from predators , hunting is illegal. Cornelius Traas<p>The pollinator variety in this orchard is Topaz, which is a scab resistant eating variety, with more acid than most, giving it an almost citrus flavour. Again in most years they would not be this red.
