About last week I had set up "automatic timer" (after installing #dnf-automatic package & updating /etc/dnf/automatic*) to update the packages with #security fixes on #RockyLinux 8. That failed to update freetype v2.9 package due to CVE-2025-27363 https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-27363 ; so did fail dnf upgrade --security (update was included in unqualified dnf upgrade).

Utterly useless option & package. Removed the timer & dnf-automatic package.

This -- failure of dnf upgrade --security to update vulnerable packages -- had happened a second time (yes, I had forgotten the uselessness of it; a timely reminder it was). I will need to stick to update-all-the-packages.

I want to compile some stuff (OpenRV) without tainting my system. So I‘ve tried creating a virtual machine on a spare mini PC using Redhat‘s web-based Cockpit admin interface. It‘s a frontend to libvirt and so far it all works flawlessly.
Really cool to not have to rely on proprietary VMware tools.

Dismal Wizard decided today was sufficiently dismal to rebuild the Dismal Roon Server. So he put Rocky Linux 9 on it so he could install a backup client on it to backup the music library and stuff.

DW forgot he’d formatted his removable music media EXFAT only to discover Rocky9 did not include it in the kernel.

Fortunately the Mac could share it and Rocky HomeLab could mount the share. So DW is having a copy the disk party.

The new volume is XFS.

That's so freaking weird lol... on one of my #Proxmox nodes, I had started a test VM (#RockyLinux/#RHEL), and I was installing a single package on it, and for wtv reason that ended up powering off ALL other VMs on that Proxmox node other than that one test node.

I've never had this happen before in my #homelab, on Proxmox or #ESXi, but it's incredibly concerning for sure lol. I have some critical stuffs on it too like my #TrueNAS server, some of #Kubernetes nodes, etc. and to have them just... power off like that without any alerts or logs explaining it, not on the GUI anyway, is insane.

Rocky Linux is nice so far! But one frustrating thing about it inheriting RHEL is the lack of support for the SPICE protocol everything else uses.

It's needed for a whole bunch of VM-related stuff - clipboard access, USB passthrough, GPU acceleration on Linux VMs, etc. but apparently SPICE is being deprecated for Red Hat.
