Arachnids in the news.
“What we try to remind people is yes, it's scary, but it is really rare,” said Elizabeth Schiffman, a Minnesota Department of Health epidemiologist specializing in mosquito- and tick-transmitted diseases. “Don't forget to do all those prevention things that we talk about that no one ever wants to do because they're boring and not fun. Do your tick checks. Know when your risk is highest.”

I didn't realise TBEV had arrived in the UK (first case detected 2019) so that's another thing to worry about. The paper maps habitats, deer species and amount of human recreational activity to identify potential hotspots for TBEV in humans - scroll down to Results for maps and tables

New on Entomology Today: A new study highlights how the CDC's National Tick Surveillance Program has improved tick-monitoring efforts at both state and federal levels. Since 2018, 36 states have joined the program, helping public health professionals communicate the potential risk of vector-borne diseases. #entomology #ticks #PublicHealth https://entomologytoday.org/2025/03/12/cdc-national-tick-surveillance-program-protecting-public-health/

What defines a BITE?
I've had ticks attached to me, pulled off, but how long were they there? Less than 24 hours.
It's too late, after they spread disease. My routine, is Tick Check every time after outdoor activities.
Ever been bitten by a tick?

I usually go on nature walks with long pants and sleeves, but I've seen others go with minimal clothing.
"While Singapore does not require doctors to report tick bites or tick-borne diseases, a recent study has learnt that all 11 species of ticks found to have bitten humans in the island-state between 2002 and 2023 are capable of carrying one or more harmful microbes."

Saskatchewan man hopes to raise awareness about Lyme disease with support group
Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose because it has similar symptoms to other illnesses. One Saskatchewan man has created a support group for those with the disease.

@Njord AFAIK they changed the ingredientsvto a formula that works perfevtly in the #USA but not at all in the #EU, and frustratingly, they basically monopolized that market and don't even let another compamy produce the original version.

Found my first tick ever on my dog tonight, and I am mortified! Egad. I was able to fully remove the tick as evident in its crawling when I set it down. Egad x2. I treated the bite with rubbing alcohol and then packed it with antibiotic ointment. I image searched it and have determined it's a dog tick.
What more should I be doing?

New on Entomology Today: If a member of the U.S. military finds a tick on their body, they submit it to the "MilTICK" program, which tests it for pathogens. They also note whether they were wearing a uniform treated with permethrin, and a study of more than 22,000 MilTICK submissions over nearly a decade shows strong evidence that treating uniforms with permethrin is successful in protecting wearers from tick-borne disease. #entomology #ticks https://entomologytoday.org/2024/11/05/permethrin-treated-uniforms-protection-tick-borne-disease-military/
New on Entomology Today: A single pesticide treatment after fall's first frost can eliminate blacklegged ticks through the following spring, according to a recent study in Connecticut. Dropping the now-standard spring tick treatment can save homeowners money and greatly reduce risk to nontarget insects and arthropods that are active in spring. #entomology #ticks #IPM https://entomologytoday.org/2024/10/31/single-pesticide-treatment-fall-blacklegged-tick-management/
