Does anyone here self host Mastodon with @yunohost ?
I'm just curious how well it works given Masto's reputation for being tricky to upgrade without breaking?
Please boost for a larger sample size! Tx!
@Blort @yunohost I ran yunohost when I was just barely tipping my toes into the ocean of self hosting. I think it's fantastic for beginners, and I even ran my own mastodon instance from it for a short while.
However, from my experience it runs just fine, but because it does everything for you in the background you don't really know how it works (at least I didn't but idk your experience) so when mastodon filled my 180gb VPS host and borked it's self, I had zero idea on how to remedy the situation at the time.
As far as upgrades go, Yunohost makes a backup of Mastodon before it updates so that if anything does go wrong during the process you can always fall back on that. Make sure to have the disk space for it though lol.
@Blort @yunohost I'm running mastodon inside my yunohost instance, I would say it works great but I have some custom setup for partitions and there is still some bugs related to that in Yunohost. For one user the cache toots take around 45GB so I think I will move it in other dedicated VM at some point but for now it's working.
@Blort Mastodon has worked well even on an ancient laptop, but care must be taken when upgrading. The cache can grow to many GB and will give a correspondingly large backup file, so some cleaning up before upgrading is recommended. This is a Mastodon thing and in no way Yunohost's fault. Thank you, #Yuhohost! @yunohost
