"Cloud is an abstraction and a distraction. Like so much digital, it gives the impression of lightness, impermanence, of something that is benign, of something that is good for the environment. Cloud and digital act to remove us from our physical environment and its responsibilities. We don’t see the impact of our actions. We don’t feel or sense that what we do in cloudland affects the land and the sea."

Fedi usage PSA
Don't. Use. Link. Shorteners.
Every link you post that's longer than 23 characters is treated as though it's 23 characters long.
Link shorteners do *nothing* except
1. Allow for folks to be tracked and their IP's exposed in some cases.
2. Obscure what you're linking and cause people not to trust that you're not going to link them something malicious.
Stop using them.
Since I was born, this is probably the fourth "once-in-a-lifetime" financial crisis we're heading for.
But I think our whole system is one big, deepening crisis, and it's collapsing before our very eyes. It is inherently out of balance and is essentially based on the assumption that we all agree that people take advantage of others. Whether it is corporations capitalizing on the working class or wealthy nations that abuse their powers to gain advantages in the global scheme of things.
Hi everyone, I'm off the grind, and that also means I'm off the dole. I'm running out of money, and I'm looking for a job.
If anyone needs a sysadmin with 6 years of professional and 18 years of hobbyist experience, please send me a DM.
My toolset includes (but is not limited to) the following:
- MySQL / MariaDB
- QEMU / KVM
- Proxmox VE
- BIND (named)
- Quagga/Bird (limited, but still)
- Nagios (nrpe, nsca)
I'm open to learning new stuff.
Please repost if nothing else!
Just donated a couple of €s to PeerTube for their roadmap to V3 and I encourage you to send a little their way aswell!
Their plans for the coming month include improvements to moderation, plugins, playlists and even livestreams with p2p support. PeerTube is really shaping up to be a fantastic project to replace the current data silos and to put power into the hands of people and communities. Go support them!

I don't like all the anger I see here, even if I would otherwise agree with the underlying point. I find that a section of all-caps text doesn't help in making a problem more widely understood and accepted. I feel like it just ends up intensifying the conflict by making the sides more absolute, separate and angry.
I understand that a lot of issues can make you angry and sad, I feel it too. But I don't feel like just venting this anger to everyone is the right way to make a positive change.
What the heck happened to the social.tchncs.de timeline, I wake up and there are almost secondly posts of people I have never seen here before in various languages. Did something happen overnight that made a bunch of people join Mastodon and they just happened to join here, or are these very sophisticated bots?
One more thing about donations:
Please consider making a recurrent contribution instead of a one-off one. This would help us greatly to continue working on F-Droid more consistently in the future.
We are currently at a point where the donations can *almost* pay for part-time development instead of being just able to pay for a coffee. Donations being recurrent instead of one-time help make that a lot more sustainable. :-).
SourceHut donated €1,000 to PeerTube for their v3 efforts, you can help too:
We're chatting on the "fediverse", in which a bunch of "instances" "federate" with each other. These words, oft repeated, lose some of their meaning, but think deeper into the etymology of the fediverse.
This is not a platform, it is a federation (noun) of soverign platforms (plural). The true, profound power of the fediverse is in its decentralized governance and the treaties established between its soverign states.
I was just looking through ebooks that are public domain and was wondering whether Orwell's 1984 is public domain:
No it isn't, but it will be on 1 January 2021, so it won't be long!
From the book's Wikipedia article:
"[...] the United Kingdom is considered the country of origin and its copyright period extends until the first day of January following 70 years after the death of the author. George Orwell [...] died in 1950, so the novel enters the public domain on 1 January 2021.

ℹ️ Partypeople, the spread of misinformation, hate and fear around covid-19 and other stuff is getting out of hand. We want this instance to be a happy place and do not support conspiracy.
Starting today, we will go after this more strictly. Affected accounts may get a warning for their behavior first, missing insight will result in suspension.
Some accounts may get suspended without warning, if they act too aggressively.
We will act based on proven facts.
Can somebody tell me why/how Rust sucks?
I am looking to learn a programming language and Rust sounds great for various reasons, but I'd like to also hear some reasons why it sucks (as a language or as a project) and perhaps advice on what to go for instead. Also, I am willing to fight my way through learning how to write safe and good code, so a complaining compiler is a good thing to me. I am more curious about other criticisms :)
Thanks in advance!
