What is this Gemini thing anyway, and why am I excited about it?

@solderpunk I was just exploring gemini and read a few of your posts on sustainability and computing and I absolutely love them and agree with you. I was very happy to see these opinions shared somewhere.
Just wanted to tell you this as feedback for your efforts. I will definitely be sharing this around because peoples' love for technology often blinds them to the catastrophy that is manufacturing these electronics. Just thank you and I look forward to seeing you around more :)
The consistent push toward the "sharing economy" and or the "gig economy" makes me very uneasy, especially when it comes to physical things like houses, cars, or food. The end result will be that regular people don't own anything and don't know how to do things, whether that's repair your vehicle or cook a meal at home. When push comes to shove, the corporation actually owning such things can cut you off with virtually no consequences.

Brief summary of the T&C for using the internet in my student dorm.
Is this even legal?
This is not satire! I don't even know whether to laugh or cry! I guarantee that less than 5% of the tenants are conforming with these rules. Most people attach their own router. The network is so insecure that I can find other people's routers on them, complete with factory passwords.
FYI there is also only one single LAN cable, no WIFI.
Happy ten years of F-Droid π!
@unicorn For working with hand toools, I highly recommend the YT-channel of Paul Sellers. He is using "western" tools, but it is a pleasure to watch and listen to him. I learned a ton e.g. sharpening tools, using hand planes, chisels, saws and marking knife, chiseling mortices, cutting tenons,...
And it took me very long to make it, easily more than 20h of working time, spread over a week or more π
My first successful woodworking project, entirely made with hand tools!
Wood was prepared with a japanese plane, cut with japanese saws; joints cut and chiseled by hand, glass was cut by hand, even the glue I made myself from glutinous rice!
It's not perfect but I learned a ton and am extremely happy with it, given that it's my first project π
Not sure about the wood, I think it's plum. It was two pieces of european fruit tree scrap wood.

Does anyone have a suggestion for good Cloudflare alternatives?
I suggested removing Cloudflare from the website of an organization and they responded that they share my concerns, but as they are frequently targets of DDoS attacks, they needed some sort of solution. They told me they do not have the resources to create an in-house solution for these attacks, so they asked me for other suggestions.
Do any of you have suggestions for less harmful defense against DDoS attacks?
Thanks in advance!
Dear Fediverse,
are there any cool FOSS apps or websites for identifying plants? I frequently want to use one but never know what to use or whether there are any ethical ones that don't mistreat user data. :)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
