Golden Retriever GF
Sometimes you need to step outside of your own language to understand the oddities of your own. I was trying to make sense of the verb erzahlen. Which is like to tell a story. Er- is pretty close to re- in English and zahlen means to count so I had to ask myself "What the hell is Recount".

Or yesterday it struck me that verstehen is a combination of the prefix ver and stehen. Ver is a harder prefix to get into than ver but Stehen means to stand. I was like what the hell. What is that in English .... UnderSTAND?! How on earth did I not catch that my language is so strange?!

#bilingualproblems #german #english

Golden Retriever GF
Denglish and Spanglish and other mixed languages are usually to make things cuter or make things flow better than they would in their mother tongue or are from border cultures or whatever. But sometimes they are from a poor bilingual bisexual that needs more eeps and more coffee. For today I did my most disgraceful Denglish ever in the shower

Why muss I wakey sein?

I was trying to say "Why do I have to be wakey" but replaced the verbs with German. It was painful. Send help ... and also coffee.

#immigrantlife #bilingualproblems

Golden Retriever GF
Sometimes being bilingual leads to odd problems. Like Germans not taking the bald Eagle seriously due to how much Eagle sounds like der Igel ( The Hedgehog ).

I am now having the reverse problem. I have read Dune, Frank Herbet quite a few times so now I am reading it in German. The word for a Duke is der Herzog. I cannot take them calling him "Der kühne aufrechte Herzog" and not imagine him as a hedgehog.

I will not fear the Atreides Hedgehog, fear is the little death ....

#immigrantlife #bilingualproblems #dune

Pippa 🧡🧡🧡
toddler is starting to read hiragana and on tonight’s dog walk we went round looking at car number plates, trying to read the first character of each one

got to て*, and she whips round and confidently says, “Hand!!” 🥹😂 #BilingualProblems

(*non-J-speakers: て is read “te” which, yes, is Japanese for “hand” (手))

Frankie Saxx
@apps if someday you had nothing higher priority, it would be nice if I could set preferred posting languages so when I change language on my post my preferred languages are at the top so I don't have to scroll through the list so much :ablobcatheart: #BilingualProblems
