1001 Other Albums
[This guest post was written by platenworm about number 659 on The List. The album was also submitted by platenworm.]

The Laughing Hyenas from Ann Arbor, Michigan were the most intense band I ever saw. And, despite their madness, they managed to stay together with the best line up for some 5 years and kicked out a mini-LP and two fantastic LPs.

It started to get real heavy, ugly and great when Jim Kimball took over the drum sticks. He glued the insanity of John Brannon, Larissa Stolarchuk and Kevin Monroe perfect together with his tight and manic drumming.

Before the Laughing Hyenas, singer John Brannon made a name for himself in the Hardcore band Negative Approach. Larissa Stolarchuk on guitar started out in L-Seven (not to be confused with L7) as a singer, and, just like Kevin Monroe had never played bass before, she never played the guitar before the Laughing Hyenas. She and Kevin changed their last name into Strickland while in the Hyenas.

In 1987 they released the debut mini LP Merry Go Round, to be followed by their first full length You Can’t Pray A Lie in 1989. Both records are fantastic, and I was already a big fan when they toured You Can’t Pray A Lie and hit my hometown Groningen, Netherlands, in the Vera Club where I worked (show on Youtube). Nothing could prepare me for the hurricane that took place on that stage that night. Every member was totally lost in their own out-of-control mental universe, but they still managed to stick it together. Like four high-speed atoms exploding in a grand total collision. A mind-bending experience, very heavy and actually also quite scary. A lot of bands try to be scary and evil, which make them actually quite funny in a way. But not the Laughing Hyenas – they didn’t have to try anything, they just were.

So, how to top something like that? Well they just released their masterpiece Life of Crime the following year. The album is named after The Weirdos song they also cover on this record, but I’m not gonna describe the music for you. You just have to go listen and turn it way up to 11. All albums are produced by the great Butch Vig and released by the legendary Touch And Go label.

After these albums, things started to fall apart. The last EP Crawl and LP Hard Times are very good, but Life of Crime was so intense that it outshines the rest. Kevin and Jim started the wonderful band Mule (check out the If I Don’t Six LP). John formed the High-Energy Detroit Rock band Easy Action. And Larissa sadly passed away in 2006. But she luckily left us with the legacy of the Laughing Hyenas and me with a vivid image of her wonderful live performance. One of a kind.

Bandcamp: Laughing Hyenas – Life of Crime

Discogs: Laughing Hyenas – Life of Crime

[Alt text for accompanying image: The album art work is a drawing in black and white.
