Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/the-7th-guild-triumviro-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The 7th Guild – Triumviro Review</a></p><p><i>By Kenstrosity</i></p><p>To compare your band to <strong>The Three Tenors</strong> is a bold move, to say the least. By making this connection, you inherently pit yourself against three of the greatest opera singers of their time (at the very least three of the most well-known). Yet, this is exactly how <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/skeletoon-the-1-21-gigawatts-club-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>SkeleToon</strong></a>‘s Tomi Fooler describes his freshly minted supergroup, <strong>The 7th Guild</strong>, in anticipation of their debut full-length <em>Triumviro</em>. Boasting his own voice in tandem with Giacomo Voli (<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/rhapsody-of-fire-challenge-the-wind-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Rhapsody of Fire</strong></a>) and Ivan Giannini (<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/vision-divine-destination-set-to-nowhere-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Vision Divine</strong></a>, <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/derdian-dna-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Derdian</strong></a>), Tomi’s latest project attempts a symphonic power metal triple threat of the same legendary caliber as the aforementioned <strong>Tenors</strong>. It takes gumption to attempt that feat. Can <strong>The 7th Guild</strong> win over the <span><strong>Ken</strong></span>dom?</p><p>The short answer is no. With nothing substantial to distinguish this project from the pool of power from which it draws deep, <em>Triumviro</em> proffers a particularly earnest and passionate form of overblown, hyper-melodic symphocheese. Positivity and bleeding heart melodramatics abound, surrounded by a blunderbuss of horns, keys, strings, and a too-thin layer of guitars hell-bent on proselytizing the virtues of the power chord. Unlike equally opulent acts like <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/twilight-force-at-the-heart-of-wintervale-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Twilight Force</strong></a> and <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/fellowship-the-skies-above-eternity-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Fellowship</strong></a>, <strong>The 7th Guild</strong> epitomizes the generic at every stage, so much so that at times, it is difficult even to distinguish any of the three vocalists from each other (save for one member who possesses an especially nasal, though not altogether unpleasant, tone). Nonetheless, it’s a formula that works and has worked for decades, which means that despite myself, <em>Triumviro</em> thrust a few of its best moments deep in my brain.</p><p></p><p><strong>The 7th Guild</strong> are at their best when singing in their native Italian. Lush as the most richly layered <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/fleshgod-apocalypse-opera-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Fleshgod Apocalypse</strong></a> magnum opus, “La Promessa Cremisi” revels in decadent vocal layers, a million heavily rolled ‘r’s, cinematic orchestrations, and a sky-high soaring chorus riding on the rippling back muscles of a classic power metal gallop. Insertions of Italian scattered throughout the excessive “Glorious” help offset its cringe-inducing, but sticky “YOU’RE MAKIN’ ME GLOOOOOOOOOORRRRIIOOOOUS” refrain. “In Nomine Patris” exudes regality in its fanfare, marching forth with an operatic pre-chorus followed immediately by a triumphant chorus that would be right at home on any <strong>Twilight Force</strong> epic. As if this wasn’t enough, a delightful high-octane guitar solo launches the final third in dramatic fashion, giving the final chorus the momentum it needed to justify its inclusion in the song’s six-plus-minute span. It is moments like these, among a few others spotting this forty-eight-minute runtime, that make <em>Triumviro</em> enjoyable and fun, at least for a moment.</p><p></p><p>Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of <em>Triumviro</em>’s successes are ephemeral, too easily overshadowed by lackluster power metal sullied further by saccharine writing and unchecked vocal exhibitions. Ballad “Time” is delicate and fluffy, but having three singers of functionally identical tone and range wailing in concert with the soaring lead guitar flattens the entire piece to the point of collapse. A total lack of tonal and textural depth persists throughout the back half of the record, continually fumbling moves that could’ve made a lasting impression. “Guardians of Eternity” borders on annoying, its vocal layering creating cacophony as one singer chooses to hold notes longer than the rest at arbitrary points, while another comes in a fraction too late to line up properly in the arrangement. Later on, one of the vocalists makes an unhinged choice attempting an operatic run in the style of Tarja Turunen. Not only does this moment clash against already tepid songwriting with its poor execution, but it also illustrates the competitive, rather than cooperative, nature of <strong>The 7th Guild</strong>’s vocal performances. Furthermore, this egregious showboating behavior puts a spotlight on the oversimplified, underutilized metallic instrumentation in the background, as demonstrated by the overwrought “The Metal Charade.” Closer “Fairy Tale” doesn’t fare much better as the over-performed, nasal balladry dominates the soundscape with questionable choices and strained reaches, all in the name of bombast.</p><p>The most damning aspect of <strong>The 7th Guild</strong>’s troubled debut is the impression it leaves with this listener. After the dust settles and I lay <em>Triumviro</em> to rest, I breathe a heavy sigh of relief. Its first five songs aren’t that bad, and two of those are arguably good. But even those can’t escape the problems pervading the entire record. Moreover, its second half is a clinic on what not to do, from writing to performance, on a symphonic power metal record. In short, right now <strong>The 7th Guild</strong> are closer to <strong>The Three Tricksters</strong> than <strong>The Three Tenors</strong>.</p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> Bad<br><strong>DR:</strong> 8 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 160 kbps mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="http://www.scarletrecords.it/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Scarlet Records</a><br><strong>Website:</strong> <a href="http://facebook.com/the7thguild" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/the7thguild</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> February 21st, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/15/" target="_blank">#15</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/derdian/" target="_blank">#Derdian</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/feb25/" target="_blank">#Feb25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/fellowship/" target="_blank">#Fellowship</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/italian-metal-metal/" target="_blank">#ItalianMetalMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/power-metal/" target="_blank">#PowerMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/rhapsody-of-fire/" target="_blank">#RhapsodyOfFire</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/scarlet-records/" target="_blank">#ScarletRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/skeletoon/" target="_blank">#Skeletoon</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/symphonic-metal/" target="_blank">#SymphonicMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/the-7th-guild/" target="_blank">#The7thGuild</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/the-three-tenors/" target="_blank">#TheThreeTenors</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/triumviro/" target="_blank">#Triumviro</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/twilight-force/" target="_blank">#TwilightForce</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/vision-divine/" target="_blank">#VisionDivine</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/athena-xix-everflow-part-1-frames-of-humanity-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Athena XIX – Everflow Part 1: Frames of Humanity Review</a></p><p><i>By Dolphin Whisperer</i></p><p>Before Fabio Lione rose to prominence with<strong> [(Luca) Turilli(/Lione)’s] Rhapsody [of Fire]</strong> and <strong>Angra</strong>, <strong>Athena</strong>—stylized now as <strong>Athena XIX</strong><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/athena-xix-everflow-part-1-frames-of-humanity-review/#fn-204087-1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">1</a>—served as another potential vehicle into the growing European prog/power landscape. Wielding an of-the-time histrionic <strong>Dream Theater</strong> guitar-driven drama alongside the lightness of chorus-driven power metal, the low-fanfare Italian outfit<strong> </strong>never quite topped any charts despite respectable musicianship and Lione’s formative pipes on 1998’s <em>A New Religion</em><span><em>?.</em></span> And after another swing at success, sans the <strong>Rhapsody</strong>-snatched Lione, with 2001’s equally unreceived <em>Twilight of Days</em>, <strong>Athena</strong> hung up its spurs to ride another day. And now, twenty-six years after Lione had debuted his only full-length recording with <strong>Athena</strong>, that same line-up has returned, rested and determined to show age like a fine Parmigiano-Reggiano.</p><p><strong>Athena XIX</strong>, at core, emerges with <em>Everflow Part 1: Frames of Humanity</em> as a revived relic of the late ’90s and early ’00s prog/power realm. Finding riffs that move with the low-end groove of classic <strong>Symphony X</strong> and an overblown narrative that flies due to the talent of a powerhouse vocalist—think Jørn Lande with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9un2HDLoJ_Q" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Beyond Twilight</strong></a> or Vasilis Georgiou from <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/sunburst-manifesto-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Sunburst</strong></a>—<strong>Athena XIX</strong> hasn’t made many attempts to live in the synth-forward lands of modern takes on the style. That’s not to say that classic line-up keyboardist Gabriele Guidi strays entirely away from the dancing electronic works of a band like <strong>Voyager</strong>, with a pulsing <em>wub</em> and panning synth flutter adorning key intros to keep the total of <em>Frames</em> diverse (“Legacy of the World,” “The Calm Before the Storm”). But <strong>Athena XIX</strong> always manages to find a way back to a driving stringed refrain, whether it be in the virtuosic thick-stringed pop of Alessio Sabella (“The Day We Obscured the Sun,” “The Conscience of Everything” among others) or the down-tuned axe clamor of Simone Pellegrini.</p><p>Despite the instrumental prowess at play throughout <em>Frames</em>, its true power rests in the piped-prowess that Lione imbues into every verse and chorus. Neither as operatic as his time with any of the <strong>Rhapsody</strong>s (especially <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/turilli-lione-rhapsody-zero-gravity-rebirth-and-evolution-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Turilli / Lione Rhapsody</strong></a>) nor as aggressive as in his <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/amg-goes-ranking-angra/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">continued charge with <strong>Angra</strong></a>, Lione uses <strong>Athena XIX</strong> to play around with different, more subtle techniques. Though morose and haunting vocal harmonies are standard in the darker tones of prog/power, Lione’s wide range serves him well in creating a unique eeriness between his capable heady highs, smooth mid-range croons, ghastly counterpoint lows, and reckless nasal lashings (“Legacy…,” “The Conscience…,” “Where Innocence Disappears”). Given the number of layers that live within each phrase for these captivating runs, it’d be easy for Lione to get lost in the art of tracking. But as <em>Frames</em> progresses Lione reveals consistently that he still possesses the pure diaphragmatic might to sear gigantic choruses and gritty wails deep into ears that crave his dramatic expression with late player “Synchrolife” seeing every cranny of his voice play out against a wild-and-whipping sonic clash.</p><p></p><p>Though just about everything that <strong>Athena XIX</strong> has put to tape produces a gentle bob of a closed-eye groove or delightful and resonant harmony, <em>Frames</em> doesn’t build a strong scaffold for its cinematic scope. A few moments from a tonal perspective do feel like they belong side-by-side—the riff reprisal of “The Day…” into “The Seed,” the piano refrain morphing to modulated synth backing from “Where Innocence Disappears to “Idle Mind.” But these kinds of related happenings often occur regardless of whether an album’s connected ideas build a greater thematic whole. And with a continued reliance on huge choruses to propel interest, <em>Frames</em>’ fifty-plus minute stretch enters the realm of crescendo fatigue without a tightly woven plot to catch it. By the time we arrive at the dramatic closing segue that presumably builds for part two’s introduction, I have a hard time believing more is necessary.</p><p>Twenty-three years in the making, <em>Everflow Part 1: Frames of Humanity</em> does more right than wrong for a band who never got much of a chance to prove themselves to the greater metalverse. <strong>Athena XIX</strong> may find comfort in a sound long removed from the popular paradigm, but its members, many of whom also have assisted in the engineering and recording of this comeback album, have kept an ear to enough production trends and tonal constructions to give <em>Frames</em> a full and engaging platform to display their talents. And, perchance, its implied sequel will deliver to us a package further refined to turn gentle smiles into screaming fans.</p><p></p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 3.0/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 6 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kbps mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://shopeu.reigningphoenixmusic.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Reigning Phoenix Music</a><br><strong>Website: </strong> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Athena.Band.Italy/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">facebook.com/Athena.Band.Italy</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> December 6th, 2024</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/luca-turillis-lione-rhapsody-of-fire/" target="_blank">#LucaTurilliSLioneRhapsodyOfFire_</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2024/" target="_blank">#2024</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/30/" target="_blank">#30</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/angra/" target="_blank">#Angra</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/athena-xix/" target="_blank">#AthenaXIX</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/beyond-twilight/" target="_blank">#BeyondTwilight</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dec24/" target="_blank">#Dec24</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dream-theater/" target="_blank">#DreamTheater</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/italian-metal/" target="_blank">#ItalianMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/power-metal/" target="_blank">#PowerMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/progpower/" target="_blank">#ProgPower</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/progressive-metal/" target="_blank">#ProgressiveMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reigning-phoenix-music/" target="_blank">#ReigningPhoenixMusic</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/rhapsody/" target="_blank">#Rhapsody</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/rhapsody-of-fire/" target="_blank">#RhapsodyOfFire</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/sunburst/" target="_blank">#Sunburst</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/symphony-x/" target="_blank">#SymphonyX</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/turilli-lione-rhapsody/" target="_blank">#TurilliLioneRhapsody</a></p>

Angry Metal Guy<p><strong><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/rhapsody-of-fire-challenge-the-wind-review/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Rhapsody of Fire –&nbsp;Challenge the Wind Review</a></strong></p><p><i>By Twelve</i></p><p>As a young metalhead trying to find my way in this wayward genre, the most frustrating thing I could ever read in a review was “not as good as [earlier album]” or “sounds too much like past work.” These critiques are very useful for fellow fans, but not so much for newcomers lacking that frame of reference. It is my hope today to write a review for <em>Challenge the Wind</em> by <strong>Rhapsody of Fire </strong>that the younger me would appreciate because, despite the band’s prolific history—fifteen full-length albums over a thirty-year history—I have never listened to one from start to finish. Of course I know the band; Alex Staropoli and co. are huge names in the symphonic power metal space, which means <strong>Rhapsody of Fire</strong> <em>should</em> be right up my alley, but for whatever reason I never dove in. Still, the expectations are there, the hopes are high, and <em>Challenge the Wind</em> offers a lot, so I was eager to dive in.</p><p>Whether you’re familiar with <strong>Rhapsody of Fire</strong> or not, I suspect what is on <em>Challenge the Wind</em> won’t come as much of a surprise, as the guitars are big, the orchestrations are bigger, and the vocals are even bigger. Giaacomo Voli’s singing is a strong focal point, and his delivery is superb, nailing the catchy choruses (“Diamond Claws”), the high-but-not-annoyingly-high notes (“Challenge the Wind”), and even the odd menacing rasp (“Vanquished by Shadows”). Staropoli and Roberto de Micheli similarly do great work with the album guitars, riffing with tremolos (“The Bloody Pariah”), huge power chords (the whole album), and some appropriately speedy solos (“Black Wizard”). I wish Paolo Marchesich and Alessandro Sala’s drums and bass were a touch more audible, but even that’s expected for this style, just like the ever-present or orchestrations and keyboards that give the album much of its character and story. Through and through, <em>Challenge the Wind</em> is a bombastic display of symphonic power metal that’s as fun and cheesy as the band’s own Italy.</p><p><em>Challenge the Wind</em> opens with a one-two-three punch of its best material, laying a fantastic foundation for the album to follow. “Whispers of Doom” is one of the slower songs on the album, with a dramatic grandiosity that dials back on keys and let’s Voli do a lot of heavy lifting. “The Bloody Pariah” is similarly dramatic, but much darker and a lot faster. It features some of my favorite guitar work on the album, gritty<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/rhapsody-of-fire-challenge-the-wind-review/#fn-198294-1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">1</a> tremolo riffs accompanied by fast-paced keys that create a genuine sense of adventure. By contrast, the title track is all bombast, with huge riffs and a huger chorus, call-and-repeat choral vocals, and super energetic drumming. These three styles—bombastic, dramatic, and speedy are what <strong>Rhapsody of Fire</strong> do best across <em>Challenge the Wind</em>, and create a powerful foundation for the music they so clearly love.</p><p></p><p>I don’t, however, think <strong>Rhapsody of Fire</strong> does quite enough with the solid foundation. Beginning with the sixteen-minute “Vanquished by Shadows,” <em>Challenge the Wind</em> starts the crack. It has its moments—lots of vocal variety, some nice acoustic moments, and the album’s only keyboard solo—but never fully justifies its length or provides any climactic payoff. From here, the back half of the album is homogenous, and I still have trouble picking out which song is which when my focus returns after it inevitably wanders partway through. “Holy Downfall” has some cool orchestral moments but feels too long by several minutes, while the operatic bombast of “Black Wizard” feels a bit sillier than I think it’s meant to. Fortunately, the album ends on a strong note, as “Mastered by the Dark” takes the best five minutes of “Vanquished by Shadows” and… repeats them exactly. I’m not exactly sure why, but it does wrap up <em>Challenge the Wind</em> on what is simultaneously its strongest and strangest moment.</p><p>Strong and strange feels like a good note to end this review on as well. <em>Challenge the Wind</em> is both familiar and new; it doesn’t stray far from comforting norms, but does enough to distinguish itself enjoyably. Talent, songwriting, confidence—it’s all here. Sure, some songs are stronger than others, but it’s so hard to dislike this kind of power metal done well.
