Not only Gene Roddenberry (who hung around the sets & later took some staff with him to #StarTrek ) was inspired by its style & subjects but also none other than James Cameron apparently liked the episode "The Soldier" quite a lot ;-) And the cast! Future Star Trek icons #WilliamShatner (1x), #LeonardNimoy (2x) & #JamesDoohan (1x) made appearances (also Grace-Lee Whitney & Michael Ansara) & the legendary #RobertDuvall also starred 2 times. The stories (esp. in season 2) dealt with numerous #SciFi topics like aliens, space exploration, robot rights (I'd bet that the famous STTNG episode dealing with Data's rights as a sentient being decided in an exemplary hearing was inspired by the "I Robot" episode of Outer Limits), disembodied entities, future methods of warfare etc. Also notable: Black actors had significant roles, quite progressive for its time.

Lauren Weinstein
As I continue to note the original "The Outer Limits" episodes (though not necessarily in their original order), we come to S1 E4 -- "The Man With the Power" starring Donald Pleasence. Like the others, this is currently newly available for free on #YouTube Movies and TV, at least for now and in the U.S.

A mild-mannered man invents a "link gate" implant that he has surgically implanted in his own brain. The device is designed to extract and channel, under mental control, power from the ever-present cosmic flux surrounding us, in hopes initially of being useful for space program mining projects.

Unfortunately (and initially unbeknownst to anyone) it turns out that the unconscious mind can operate the gate in a wholly different manner than the conscious mind, with lethal results. This episode features a truly nifty and original effect that struck me as scary as hell when I originally saw it first run many years ago. Enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9kpkL6UV2k

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
Another interesting building that was featured in exterior shots for the original "The Outer Limits" is the famous "Chemosphere" in the Hollywood Hills. A round home mounted on a single high central pedestal, it's reached from the street via a funicular -- which is actually seen in use during the episode ("The Duplicate Man").

The home still stands, but the last time I was in the area some years ago, it's difficult to see due to all the vegetation growth, and can't be approached too closely since access is on a private road now. But the funicular was still there!

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
I'll add here -- as I've discussed in the past -- that the exterior shots used for the facility where this project was being conducted are of the Hollywood Hills "Lookout Mountain" Air Force Station. At the time, it was still a semi-secret government facility, and I've long suspected that the OL crew got considerable amusement from showing it on network television. If you're interested in the fascinating history of the facility (which still exists, though it is now a private home), lots of info is easy to find. There have even been documentaries made about it.

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
So now that (for the moment) all of the original "The Outer Limits" episodes are free (in the U.S.) officially on #YouTube, I guess I'm back to playing "episode guide" as I was back many, many years ago starting on the early ARPANET.

The third episode (S1 E3) was disturbing enough that a few stations on the network chose not to air it or did cut it a bit. This was the exception, contrary to some stories you might hear.

Here we go ...

One of the most classic episodes, "The Architects of Fear" (what a great title!) starred Robert Culp in one of his several appearances on the series.

A group of well-meaning (but naive, you know the type) pro-peace scientists hatch a plan to scare the world to end war. One of their own will be chosen by lots to be transformed (in a one-way process) into a horrific alien being who will appear to arrive on Earth to demand that we choose peace.

The man chosen (Culp) is married, so they have to lie to his wife claiming that he died in an accident. The transformation is a hideous process, and all most definitely does not go to plan.

Enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLSAf1zezDo

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
VERY SPECIAL: The full first season of the original classic "The Outer Limits" has been appearing on #YouTube Movies & TV over the last 24 hours or so, joining the second season that arrived a day or so earlier (as I previously posted). The entire '63-'65 series now -- for the moment -- is apparently available for free officially on YouTube, at least in the U.S.

The debut episode (S1 E1) "The Galaxy Being" tells the story of a radio engineer who makes contact with a distant alien who accidentally doesn't stay distant. It also features a dialogue about the nature of life and death and God that would probably never be permitted on network television today. And we also get to see the origin of the series' uber-recognizable oscilloscope pattern.

Enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKO_mEAz24k

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
Another side note on the original "The Outer Limits". The wonderful (and uncredited) "control voice" who did the marvelous opening and closing monologues on all (except one, I believe) episode was the great Vic Perrin.

He did many voice overs and narrations for many films of all types, and was an actor as well, appearing in, for example, the original "Mission Impossible" series (note that it was produced by Desilu, contemporaneously with the original "Star Trek").

And yes, he provided voices for Trek (Nomad, the Metrons, etc.) and appeared in the classic "Mirror, Mirror" episode.

Just thought you'd want to know.

#TheOuterLimits

Lauren Weinstein
VERY SPECIAL: For the first time ever on #YouTube AFAIK, episodes of the wonderful original "The Outer Limits" (not the unspeakable remake created many years later) are appearing officially on YouTube Movies & TV, for free. They are likely only available in the U.S. These are tagged as New so they haven't been on there long (in fact, just a matter of hours), and may at any time vanish or switch to a paid status. Do not confuse these with the same episodes that are on YT as a trial for MGM+.

It appears that in this package the entire second season of the two seasons is now online for free. There is no sign (yet) of the first season.

Fun fact: I co-wrote the "Outer Limits Episode Guide" that for many years was the ARPANET/Internet standard reference for the series (along with the companion "Twilight Zone Episode Guide"). In fact during their early years, "The Sci-Fi Channel" (before they rebranded and changed their name) used these guides on their site as their official references, and would routinely forward me emails from viewers with questions about the shows.

If you're new to the original The Outer Limits (or even if you're not), we might as well start with one of the two classic episodes that Harlan Ellison wrote for the series, called "Demon with a Glass Hand" (1964) -- shot largely in the famous Bradbury building in downtown L.A. He wrote it with actor Robert Culp in mind (who starred in several Outer Limits episodes, including this one). Enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8eUG2WMz84

#TheOuterLimits
