JaakkoOn a break, trying to figure out where we actually are in the Kemihaara Wilderness Area, Finland, during Christmas and New Year's Eve 2023/2024. We got pretty badly lost on this hike and for five days, we only had a vague idea of where we were. But since we always pack food for a few extra days, we didn't have any other emergency except that it started to become mentally exhausting. JaakkoCan’t quite remember the exact spot where I took this, but it’s somewhere in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area during my six-week solo ski tour. Fun fact: Käsivarsi means ‘arm’ in Finnish—because if you look at a map of Finland, it kind of looks like the country has one arm reaching out. JaakkoLanding strip marks left by either a Willow Grouse or a Rock Ptarmigan. These marks are quite common in Lapland. Willow Grouses typically inhabit lower areas with downy birches, while Rock Ptarmigans are usually found higher up in rocky areas. If it's really deep snow and conditions are difficult, we take very short turns. TimAnother "Interrailing through Switzerland" post: a long trip awaited me on Friday: I took the Glacier Express from Zermatt via Brig, Andermatt, Disentis/Mustér and Chur to Tiefencastel, changed to regional trains and ended up in Davos where I stayed for another two nights. The ride on the Glacier Express was comfy and often scenic, but sadly the fog around the Oberalppass prevented me from taking pictures. At Davos I tried cross-country skiing, which I havent't done since being a small child. After roughly 10 kilometers I felt my aching muscles but had lots of fun! JaakkoIn a tent during a winter storm on our hike to the Sør-Varanger area in Norway. We were on top of a fjell when the storm arrived. Visibility dropped to zero, and our ascent was one of the most difficult I’ve ever done. JaakkoWilderness hut in storm at Varangerhalvøya National Park, Norway. Lucky for us we had reached the hut previous day. Winds weren’t super bad but visibility was zero and the terrain difficult to navigate safely.
