Fiona :transbian: :autism:
Hot take: #Discord’s #monetization is one of the least predatory you can find in the current web and quite possible sustainable:

* It doesn’t use ads
* Free accounts are still a thing and all you will ever need to use their service
* The main thing you miss out on with a free account are custom emojis, something that is very nice but decidedly not ever a necessary thing!
* Enough people care enough about emojis for this to be profitable and probably sustainable. Pissing these people of enough could cause them to drop down to free accounts, so there is actually some incentive to keep them happy.

All of that is far more aligned with incentives that the users want than almost anything else that isn’t funded by donations and I can only congratulate them on getting this to work.

Importantly this doesn’t mean that I like discord. There are other issues, especially with regards to what it is sometimes used for, and a fedi-alternative like #revolt would be better, but I want to acknowledge good things where they are.

Jay Lanagan
The guy complaining about the #hyprland community must not have really been in many #discords over the past years… but they are all similar. Communities for projects or interests, unless they have over the top moderation efforts, just end up this way. Discord is akin to 90s IRC as far as I’m concerned. But really, if you don’t like something, don’t use/join it. It’s really that simple. How’s the saying go? “Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.”
