Georgiana BrummellHello. Georgiana Brummell is not my legal name, but it is what I prefer to be called. I chose it in honour of Beau Brummell. I joined Friendica in October of 2024, after Facebook closed their Basic Mobile site (not app), since their main page is barely accessible with a screen readr. However, I noticed many accessibility issues there as well, and they will take quite awhile to be resolve. I have, therefore, chosen to switch to the Blob.cat instance of Akkoma, though I do not intend to delete my Friendica account.

I live in New Jersey and am forty-one years old. Some of my interests include studying dandyism, nineteenth-century grammar, Upper Received Pronunciation, British history, and the Regency. I like coffee, tea, wine, nasal snuff, cooking, hot baths, reading British literature, nature and historical documentaries, old BBC radio shows, gardening, hot weather, and playing cards and dice. I also love cats. In classical music, I enjoy Baroque through a bit of early Romantic, with Classical being my favourite, while in popular (listen to rarely), I usually prefer 1950's through 1970's, and some acoustic recordings. I love theatre (especially English and Viennese operettas, Edwardian musical comedies), and some Regency/Georgian plays. I am starting to learn about opera, with my main focus being singers from the 1940's and earlier, due to the change in singing style that began roughly in the 1950's. I prefer antique menswear and accessories. It's my dream to either buy a genuine Edwardian suit or have one commissioned. I love wit, wordplay, and dry humour without vulgarity. My parents are lesbians, and I am a gay rights supporter. I have been totally blind since I was two months old, due to Retinopathy of Prematurity. I am happily childfree and am not religious. My main goal in life is simply to enjoy it, and have fun learning new things along the way. I am also single and searching. If you are or know a genuine dandy, or at least, a single, childfree, intelligent, well-dressed man, preferably over sixty, please tell him about me.

Please note. I don't write about American politics, race, anticapitalism, or world affairs (wars, poverty, oppression, etc.), and will not add those who do, as I don't want it filling my timelines. While I am interested in technology to an extent (particularly website accessibility), I am not a programmer or gamer, do not use Linux, and don't care what social network you use. I tend to get along better with people much older than I, but I will accept friends twenty-one and over. I have no understanding of chronic illness, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, loneliness, etc. so if you need help with that, I'm not the one to ask. I enjoy hearing about cats, cooking or gardening adventures, animals and nature, antiques, and interesting facts and life stories.

This is my journal. Georgiana Brummell
Usually, when I listen to operas, or far more often, operettas, I prefer recordings from the 1950's and earlier. This is because I prefer the older singing styles and techniques. The modern ones tend to give me a headache and don't sound right in any case. But if I find a later recording of an older singer, or an extraordinarily rare modern recording of a singer who follows the old style (some do exist), I will listen to it. The Knowle Operatic Society (under that name, as they changed later and now do a lot of modern rubbish), is an exception to that rule. They can't exactly compare to the old singers, but they definitely respect the plays they perform and do their best. They even did King's Rhapsody, for which I am eternally grateful. As any fan of Ivor Novello knows, finding his plays with full dialogue is almost impossible. Anyway, they also did this one, Merrie England, by Edward German. I haven't seen this yet, but this man is supposed to be so similar to Gilbert and Sullivan that Arthur Sullivan himself said he should be his successor, and indeed, after Sullivan's death, German finished his Emerald Aisle, which I also must see.

youtube.com/watch?v=ac7Cy8E_o0…

So now, I will watch this one. Please, if anyone knows where I can find full recordings (or old recordings of songs) from English or Viennese (translated into English if full) operettas let me know. I am always seeking more. And if you are a singer of the old style, thank you so much for sharing your lovely work with the world!

Here we go!

Merrie England-Knowle Operatic Society-1981

youtube.com/watch?v=sly5elfzDH…

There are many good recordings of songs from about 1918 through the 1950's on Youtube. Georgiana Brummell
Things I am Seeking

Note. I have no interest in political correctness, no hatred of men, etc.

Book suggestions. (They must be online, preferably in txt, though audiobooks with good narators are acceptable). I primarily read British literature from the nineteenth century and earlier, though I may read some from the twentieth. I love silver fork/fashionable novels (Regency, not Victorian), things about the upper (titled) and upper middle (rich but not titled) classes, memoirs/biographies (usually related to the dandies, men about town, men of the clubs, and wits), anecdotes, things about dandyism, books about the Regency and/or Edwardian eras, male fashion (yes, I have Male and Female Costume by Beau Brummell/see my pinned post on dandyism), and old children's books. I love Wind in the Willows, for example. I also enjoy a bit of fantasy and science fiction, as I am fascinated by books about other worlds, magical creatures, talking animals, etc. I have no interest in modern rot with obscenities and who knows what.

Operettas. I am always seeking English or Viennese (translated into english) operettas. Extra points if they are original recordings, as I love old operetta/opera singing, though I will except amateur or even professional recordings if they have full dialogue. I have all of Gilbert and Sullivan, including original d'Oyly Carte recordings, a lot of Ivor Novello (always seeking more), some Franz Lehar (including with Richard Tauber), etc.

Old BBC radio shows. As with books, I prefer things about the upper and upper middle classes. I am always seeking anything with Upper RP. I am a huge Paul Temple fan, and even love the modern recordings, as they actually used original equipment and their accents are flawless! Rarely have I ever heard modern performances of anything that could equal the originals, but these do. I like old documentaries, too.

Audio recordings of elocution lessons in Upper RP or Transatlantic. Please do not recommend books, unless they don't rely on IPA. I use a screen reader (NVDA) and it cannot handle IPA characters, nor do I understand them.

Grammars, preferably from the early 1800's. I have many from about 1880 to 1926 or so, but I want older ones. I do not follow modern linguists and am utterly fascinated by nineteenth-century English. It has been my goal to adopt it for daily use for many, many years.

#AudioDramatisations #books #Edwardian #English #grammar #literature #operettas #radio #ReceivedPronunciation #recommendations #Regency #theatre

Georgiana Brummell
Today is the 132nd anniversary of the birth of Ivor Novello, a true man of the theatre. From non-musical plays such as the Truth Game, to silent films such as The Lodger (later remade with sound), to talkies such as I Lived with You, to the wonderfl operettas for which he is so well-known, such as the Dancing Years, he demonstrated extreme versitility, creativity, and genius. His ability to bring characters to life with exacting detail, often in glamorous settings, and to choose just the right actors to play them, was legendary. While he died at only fifty-eight, he left us with intriguing worlds to explore, many lovely songs to sing, and a true appreciation of greatness. May we remember him today and always keep a song and hope in our hearts.

Note: Many of his films, both silent and with sound, several of his songs by the original artists, and a few tributes and documentaries, some again with those who knew him, can be found on Youtube. Others can be purchased on Amazon..

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_Nov…

#acting #actors #birthday #geniuses #IvorNovello #musicals #music #operettas #plays #producers #theater #theatre

Georgiana Brummell
(Everything I have, except Glamorous Night, and The Dancing Years, can be found on Youtube.)
Tomorrow is my birthday, so I've decided to treat myself to an Ivor Novello film. I must be very careful with these, as he only made a few. I'm not counting the silent ones, since I'm blind and obviously can't watch them. I've already seen, and loved, I Lived with You. I'm missing Symphony in Two Flats, But the Flesh is Weak (wrote but not in), and The Truth Game (wrote but not in). But I still have Once A Lady, The Lodger, Sleeping Car, and Autumn Crocus. Which one should I watch?

As for his plays, they are ridiculously difficult to find with full dialogue. If you know of any, please let me know! I managed to locate Perchance to Dream, and King's Rhapsody, both amateur but wonderful. King's Rhapsody was actually performed by the Knowle Operatic Society in 1981. How they managed to capture that in sound I have no idea, since I can't imagine it was a professional recording. Maybe, they used Super8mm. I believe some of those cameras had sound. Anyway, I also watched the film version of Glamorous Night, whose only saving grace was Mary Ellis, and I'm waiting on the 1950 version of The Dancing Years, with none other than Olive Gilbert! Finding anything with her speaking in it is almost a miracle. If anyone knows where I can find a film called Ivor Novello, from 1956 or so, please let me know. Many of his people are in it, and I would absolutely love to see it, particularly for that reason! I also have a delightful version of Valley of Song, recorded in 1955! This is a special and poignant, as the play was left unfinished at Novello's death and was completed by his librettist, Christopher Hassall, the one man I think should have done it, since he, more than anyone, knew Novello's style and thought process in such matters. A museum actually uploaded it from an audiocassette, but this is not a radio performance. It appears to be the film, which made me laugh, since now, the sighted get to experience how I see films without audio description! But it's really not fair to laugh when the ones suffering are my peers who fight like hell to get anything from/by Novello! It would be amazing, though, to have what does exist audio-described. I think, though, that I will listen to Valley of Song tonight. I am very curious about it. I'll save tomorrow for the film.

#audiodescription #blind #ChristopherHassall #cinema #films #IvorNovello #MaryEllis #OliveGilbert #operettas #plays #talkies #theatre
