I honestly don’t understand why it had taken so long for this antiquated and homophobic policy to change.
@georgetakei Until a few months ago this stupid unscientific and homophobic rule still existed in Germany.
@pasci_lei @georgetakei they have toned it down, but it still exists in The Netherlands; you can now donate if you are gay/bi/queer, but only if you didn’t have any m2m sex. Doesn’t matter if monogamous or not.
@evi @pasci_lei @georgetakei as far as I understood, this had to do with the HIV risk, which they do not want in the blood pool.
I am not familiar with frequency of HIV infections and how soon it can be detected, so I assumed that had something to do with (over)cautious hiv deterrence.
I know from experience they cautious on the side of very cautious.
@CyclesSmiles @evi @pasci_lei @georgetakei thing is straights can have HIV or other blood related issues. So going around assuming every gay man has a HIV is pretty homophobic.
Maybe just test everyone before getting blood from them.
