social.tchncs.de is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A friendly server from Germany – which tends to attract techy people, but welcomes everybody. This is one of the oldest Mastodon instances.

@inquiline @akstuhl @erazlogo I don't think we have the data transparency to clearly determine anything empirically, unfortunately. There'd also be some real economies of scale going in the favour of Twitter, to be fair, but I also suspect that being ad free would cinch it. Ad delivery is such a baroque thing.

@Aepasek @inquiline @akstuhl Thank you! On the bird site @mel_hogan got pretty much the same answers on cloud efficiencies vs ads and adv/timeline algorithms. It would be great if M instances could collaborate with community-oriented green energy projects as @dawnnafus @Melf and @stefanlaser suggest. could offset growth of the #fediverse

@erazlogo @inquiline @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus @Melf @stefanlaser I've long contemplated doing an instance on a backyard solar-powered raspberry pi! (Though my enthusiasm for the infrastructure part is not matched with an equal passion for content moderating).

@Aepasek @maximilian @erazlogo @inquiline @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus @stefanlaser oh that‘s cool. Are there any initiatives supplying servers with wind energy in a similar fashion?

@Melf @maximilian @erazlogo @inquiline @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus @stefanlaser Not that I'm aware of. Wind is a lot harder to scale down, whereas solar is as effective however you divide it because of cell modularity.

That said, I do love the poetic idea of a community windmill server where you take your discourse to get ground into grain...

@Aepasek @Melf @maximilian @erazlogo @inquiline@mastodon.social @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus Oh that sounds fantastic. On a more reflexive note, are you folks interested in an online workshop about the establishment of such instances and the politics of data centres?

I work in a new research centre on virtual worlds, in a project that explores the entanglement of knowledge production and planetary resources using data centres as an example. We have resources and people at our disposal to do things.

@mel_hogan @stefanlaser @erazlogo @maximilian @akstuhl @inquiline @Aepasek @dawnnafus That's great - many thanks. But I actually do not have much of a clue of data centres. If they involve something social and agricultural or rural at least I could participate, I suppose.

@stefanlaser @Aepasek @Melf @erazlogo @inquiline @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus not sure I'd have much to contribute, but would definitely love to participate in something like this! I'm coordinating a project on elemental media and wind in particular, so there might be some overlap

@maximilian @Aepasek @Melf @erazlogo @inquiline@mastodon.social @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus I think that sounds fab, I will reply sometime this week with a suggestion.

@stefanlaser @Aepasek @Melf @maximilian @erazlogo @inquiline @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus
I'd love to know if the research centre on virtual worlds would have ideas for MFA master's thesis projects for Interaction Design students and could mentor them 😍
this is just the kind of thing some of the students are looking for

@ckohtala Oh, I actually don't know about that, but I can ask. What is know is that mentoring in Germany is done by professors.

The centre is quite new (EN website still in development), and there will probably be new PhD positions on top of the one's we anyway got sometime next year.

@Aepasek @Melf @maximilian @erazlogo @inquiline@mastodon.social @akstuhl @mel_hogan @dawnnafus Just fyi everyone, I will send an e-mail tomorrow to your public-ish profile (institutional accounts I can find). You can also send me an e-mail if I should use a particular address: stefan.laser@ruhr-uni-bochum.de

We can use the slightly more secure e-mail exchange for organizing and the meetup itself.
