@landley @burnoutqueen Yeah...

#GPLv3 is a desaster as it's 99% ideology and 1% license text and alongside #AGPLv3 completely ignores the reality of how #licensing and #patents and #IP works.

  • Not that I like the status-quo, but we'd rather see businesses steer clear of anything GPLv2+ or GPLv3 or worse.

And on the flipside we basically get "source available" stuff like #SSPL which only serves as a means to commit #AssetDenial and monopolize commercial offerings...

@baris

I'm an excited user about the fediverse that was testing out try.nodebb.org and did some tests and liked it!

Even this is sort of a test but also a post about myself being a "NodeBB User", a federated user.

Perhaps the line gets blurred when we are all in the fediverse.

I've been impressed so far by NodeBB and only recently *also* realized you are a FLOSS GPLv3 project.

My emotional state: speechless

#Autonomi have announced their decentralised peer-to-peer storage network.

The big deal here is:
- Autonomi nodes run on anything (Raspberry Pi, an old laptop, home server, whatever) so anyone can participate
- maximal #decentralisation, security and privacy
- storage for a one-off fee ensures data and websites will not be lost, link rot won't happen and developers have the ability to scale without infrastructure costs or VC funding

Upgrade to #GPLv4?

Nothing wrong with #GPLv3, but I feel it does need to be updated to specifically make it unlawful to put the code on any repository owned or operated by an entity that is engaging in software theft (eg. Micros(ha)ft servers). That means no code on git-hub(dot) com.... includes forks and mirrors obviously.

Microsoft supports #softwareTheft via their so-called "ai".

(NOTE: The new license wouldn't need to add anything about "AI" because the existing license is clear, but it probably should explicitly name micros(ha)ft as barred for the sake of clarity.)

was just chewing the fat with someone and we realized it would be good to have an "Accepted-license" header in #HTTP.

It would mean that u could ask for a response IF AND ONLY IF the response is of a particular license.

Accepted-licence: AGPLv3, GPLv3, BSD, CC0, CC-BY-SA-4.0

and then the server will respond with:
License: <<ONE OF THE ABOVE>>

....it wouldn't solve the privacy/anonymity issues of networked services but at least would force vendors claiming #FOSS to put it in writing (it should already be in writing but this would just make it persistent and mean that a person would need to periodically check what is published on a site).

dunno tho, this might already be a thing and just noone does it, lol

TIL: @tuxedocomputers released #Linux #kernel drivers for their machines under the #GPLv3, which makes it impossible for competitors and distros to ship them pre-compiled, as that license is incompatible with the #LinuxKernel's #GPLv2 only license.

They did this purposely, allegedly to "keep control of the upstream pacing" – and want to re-license the code while upstreaming.

Do you already know #ProxLB for #Proxmox clusters?

ProxLB is fully #opensource and brings some additional features into Proxmox that you might be missing after migrating from #Broadcom #VMware just like #DRS or #StorageDRS. This is where ProxLB jumps in and offers #loadbalancing features - free and opensource under the #GPLv3. ProxLB is packaged, can be installed from a .deb file, repository or run as an orchestrator in a container and fully utilizes the Proxmox API without any ssh access.

Shitstorm incoming…
"DuckStation features a fully-featured frontend build using Qt…"
