It seems I have a new pet .. in my barrel pond which I've explicitly not wanted fish in as it's quite small.
Reckon it's come in on a bird as I've not had any new pond plants for nearly a year! Frightened the life out of me when it popped out to say hello!

I took this photo today, looking down from the driveway. New Guinea impatients, purple and red, do very well until first frost with little to no watering in this area.
Found some interesting creatures this morning when I was scooping fallen leaves out of my tiny garden pond. (Sheffield, Uk)
The photo shows 4 dragonfly nymphs (larvae), a tiny water beetle and a tadpole which never made it to froghood.
The dragonfly nymphs stay in the pond for 2 years or longer, feeding on snails, tadpoles, leeches and crustaceans. See the excellent British Dragonfly Society website for the full story.

The other visitor to the pond last night was this Northern Flicker who tried to stare down the camera.
My backyard wildlife pond is basically done. Plants to be added in a few weeks after the forecasted cold spell. We atillad a lot of snow less than 2 weeks ago!
The water is still a bit murky but will clear.
I am SO excited. We hatched today!

Our backyard pond is filled with #goldfish and #koi with some of them being quite large.One of my favourite #lilies is this superb pink lily with yellow center, #nymphaeaceae. I love the deep rich yellow centre and the blushing petals.

This past summer I had my first ever garden pond - basically just a large plastic flower pot I sunk into the ground. Despite its size, it supported a lot of microscopic lofe, and the birds preferred to drink from it instead of the birdbath. I also managed to grow my first ever waterlily in it - a hardy Nymphaea. Several nymphaea species are native here.
Of course, plans for an expanded pond to be constructed in the spring are already underway!
