I like to think of the 1978 film as a sequel to the film from 1956. It even has Kevin McCarthy (from the 1956 film), in a cameo fleeing from a crowd in fear (possibly the pod people).
The 1978 film is in my opinion, another pod people outbreak in a different town.

I consider myself lucky to have discovered this film before the advent of social networking (I saw it in the early 2000s), because I've noticed that a key scene is unfortunately often leaked.

Rewatched yesterday! 
I still like this film, although it scares me less and I now think I prefer the 1956 film. I loved seeing the cast again, recognizing the cameos and the 70s atmosphere
