Apropos of nothing, a little update on this pot of living pebbles that seemed popular 6-8 weeks ago. Things are moving along!
#1: Just bigger (x3).
#2: Has absorbed last year's leaves, and I got twins! they should get more symmetrical.
#3: Little monster has doubled in size, added leaves. Will probably get him his own pot and add another lithops.
#4: Pink ones are happier, and are opening up to show new baby leaves. Others bigger, maybe will split?

Two overhead photos of the same oval pot, which contains a number of rock-like plants in among actual pebbles, dirt, and bits of perlite and gravel. Several zones are numbered in the second picture. Between the shots, the pebble-like plants (lithops) have generally gotten larger in diameter and in some cases higher out of the soil. These plants grow new leaves inside during quiet phases, and then those leaves burst out, displacing and reabsorbing their predecessors. There's one really clear instance of the resorption shown, and another where tiny buds of new leaves are visible inside the old. The rest are just hanging out and looking like rough-textured rocks. In the center of the pot is a plant that looks a bit like a carnivorous critter, with fronds along the outer leaves that give the sense of teeth -- in the first shot, that is two reddish leaves with a tiny blip of green visible between; in the second, that has opened up, the blip had become a pair of leaves perpendicular to the first, and a third set of leaves is growing. Most of these plants will be quiescent over the summer...

Here's the little, um, pebble garden I made of lithops, a sort of stone-like plant. With one little monster in the middle. (And a bunch of actual stones.)

If it weren't for the kittens racing around my room every night, I'd be filling my window sill with crazy shapes and colors!!!

Photo of an oval planter on a yellow window sill. The planter has a number of small gray stones and a couple of yellow ones. Among them are some wrinkly little plants with mostly flat heads, in shades of tan, red, and green (7 total, if that helps). The largest (upper-right) has split and two new lobes are pushing out (there's also the remnant of a flower) -- I think that the pinkish old lobes will be reabsorbed, leaving a larger split head behind. At the bottom right is a reddish specimen that actually has four lobes instead of two -- no idea what will happen when that splits. In the middle is a different plant that looks a bit like a carnivorous beast, with teeth-like fronds leaning inward from sides and top-bottom -- it grows in pairs of leaves/lobes, although I think it will add more over time, unlike the lithops. I expect this to take a year or two to figure out! Anyway, this whole planter is about 4-5 inches in the long dimension, so these plants, already 2-3 years old, are teensy.

Et les lithops sont plantés !
J'ai rajouté une couche de pierre ponce de récupe à la surface, parce que les plantes-cailloux ça aime bien pousser parmi les cailloux.
Arrosage pas avant deux semaines.
Ya deux lithops qui m'inquiètent un peu, un qui est tout sec et un qui est tout mou ; on verra bien. Pas sûr qu'iels survivent toustes. Mais la plupart ont l'air très en forme !
En bas à gauche de la photo on en voit qui ont encore un reste de fleur séchée, iels ont fleuri il n'y a pas longtemps. Pas mal d'entre eux sont en train de faire leurs nouvelles feuilles, on les voit apparaître au milieu : les anciennes feuilles vont progressivement sécher et laisser place aux nouvelles.
