Deaths from police chases are at an all-time high. These pursuits and their sometimes fatal consequences have come into sharper focus in cities like Fort Worth. But the federal data is barely scratching the surface — it only accounts for chases that ended in a fatality.

Houston Public Media · Texas doesn’t track police chases statewide. Few states in the country doBy Toluwani Osibamowo

>>The first nationwide database tracking misconduct by federal police officers has been shut down by President . . . , the Justice Department confirmed, deleting a resource that experts said improved public safety by helping to prevent bad officers from jumping to new agencies and starting over with clean records.<<

ICYMI - “The first training was very punitive, and it didn’t create a culture of learning,” Maisha Fields said. “When I brought it up to Jeff, he told me I was causing problems. I was the problem child on the consent degree advisory board.”

"In April 2022, the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act released its report. Among its 11 recommendations were replacing the RCMP with a provincial police force, adopting a new approach to mental health calls and giving First Nations self-determination over policing in their communities.

The goal was to modernize the Police Act and bring it in line with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act."

Not only did they not do anything at all on overdue & necessary #PoliceReform but the Horgan/Eby #BCNDP has spent more funds on sending cops to silence #citizens #dissent & arrest/kidnap/illegally detain Indigenous land defenders/water protectors on their own unceded lands, than any other BC government prior.

Let's not forget that #BCRCMP #CIRG unit was created in 2017, under Horganized #CrimesAgainstHumanity regime, as #CorporateMercenaries to protect ecocidal industry capital. The bill for CIRG services should be paid by the private ecocide industry they're protecting - not be put on backs of #BCTaxpayers. CIRG doesn’t protect citizens at all. It should be #abolished but this current #neoliberal greedy government isn't going to follow the moral & ethical route to do that.

Continued thread

It is one of several unusual decisions made at the #Justice Dept since #Trump took office, including the reassignment of senior officials in multiple divisions; a directive that prosecutors consider #criminal charges against #LocalOfficials who don’t cooperate w/federal #immigration enforcement efforts; a freeze on new or uncharged #CivilRights cases; & a review of #PoliceReform agreements negotiated w/localities in recent months.

Neoliberal/fascist people in positions of public power never say - Violence isn't the answer - when they give more raises to state mercenaries to buy more weapons of state funded violence & militarized/armored vehicles & to beat up nonviolent citizens exercising their rights to public #dissent & peaceful #protests.

I'm uninterested in bootlicker responses. I will block those who choose to commit bootlicking offenses on my timeline - on sight.

At least five people were killed by #Canadian #police in October 2024. This brings the total number of people killed in police actions to at least 84 so far this year. These deaths include people who were directly killed by police, as in police shootings, and people who died during police deployments or in police custody.

At least a dozen people were killed in Canadian police actions in September 2024. Thirteen people were killed in police actions in August 2024. That was the deadliest month of police violence in 2024 so far and the deadliest since September 2022, when 13 people were also killed. At least seven people were killed in Canadian police actions in July 2024, nine people were killed in police actions in June, seven people in May, 11 people in April, 11 people in March, five people in February, and four people in January 2024. There were at least 97 police-involved deaths in Canada in 2023, while in 2022, there were at least 117 #PoliceInvolvedDeaths.

Four of the victims in October were shot and killed by police. One died during an arrest.

The details below are based on police reports, reports from oversight agencies, and in some cases information from families. As always, because there are no formal, systemic mechanisms for documenting and reporting police killings publicly in Canada, all numbers presented for police-involved deaths represent an undercount. In addition to the known cases, there are instances of police-involved deaths that have no reporting. For example, the Independent Investigations Office of BC #IIO lists one death involving the #VancouverPolice Department (VPD) on October 11, for which the investigation was closed without any public report.
