No, Mr. President — Sexual Violence Isn’t an Immigration Issue

"When I read President Trump’s proclamation for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, my jaw dropped. On one hand, after he failed to recognize Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in February, it was positive to see any recognition at all.

"On the other . . . it felt more like I was reading a tirade against immigrants rather than an acknowledgment that sexual assault continues to be a prevalent issue on an international scale. It’s hard to watch Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month be used not to center survivors, but to push a political narrative that misplaces blame and distracts from the root causes of violence.

Absolutely agree.

Big tech does not *get* #consent -- because they can't be bothered & also because many of them don't understand it.

For this awareness month (#SAAM) we would love to see more folks (especially students) learn about consent through the free consent games from our nonprofit's program.

And we would love to see #tech companies understand and respect the meaning of consent.

For a moment let's look beyond Trump's nonsense tariff "plan" which is certain to cause global harms.

Please consider the words this abuser chose to use in defending the tariffs:

"our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered”

😡 I understand the economic damage is occupying everybody's thoughts but we must call Trump out for trivializing sexual assault in this way. Allowing these phrases to go unchallenged is harmful to survivors and affects public discourse / social norms.

💜 April is #SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) - please call out this sad excuse of a man for his mysogynistic, moronic, and ironic phrasing.

📚 The 2021 YRBSS (Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System) survey results were released by the CDC today.

⭐ Although it's great to see that bullying #s continue to decrease, it is frustrating that all other forms of violence are on the increase.

This is not at all surprising: schools / parents / govt are far more honest with themselves about bullying and its dangers than they are about IPV.

😞 Funding for dating violence and sexual violence is dangerously and shamefully inconsistent.

▪️ Poor mental health and suicidal ideation are on the increase for most youth groups.

▪️ 11% of high school students experienced sexual violence within the past 12 mos.

▪️ % of female students experiencing sexual violence has increased from 2017 to 2021.
