#Winter #seaice in the #Arctic just hit a record low
After months of #polar darkness, the extent of sea #ice blanketing the Arctic this winter "fell to the lowest level on record, researchers announced this week... the smallest maximum extent in the 47-year satellite record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Growing Ice

While much attention is given to the summer loss of sea ice, the birth of new ice in the fall is also critical. Ice loss in the summer leaves oceans warmer and waves larger since wind can blow across longer open stretches. Those warmer waters and more dynamic waves affect how ice forms once autumn sets in. Higher waves mean that ice tends to form in “pancakes” like those seen here. Pancake ice is small — typically under 1 meter wide — and can only be observed from nearby, since they’re smaller than typical satellite resolution. Only once there’s enough pancake ice to dampen the waves will the pieces begin to cement together to form larger pieces that will form the basis of the year’s new ice. (Image credit: M. 📈 All-time record low for daily global #SeaIce extent – #C3S

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea likely (though not certainly) reached the highest of the season on March 26 in NSIDC data. Assuming the max extent of ~672,000 km² holds, this is 24 percent below the 1991-2020 average max extent and would effectively tie with 2017 for the fourth lowest seasonal maximum since 1979 ( the satellite era). @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

Global #seaice hit record low in February
The combined area of #ice around north and south poles hit new daily minimum in early February and stayed below previous record for rest of the month, reports EU's Copernicus #ClimateChange Service. "One of the consequences of a warmer world is melting sea ice," said deputy director, Samantha Burgess. "The record or near-record low sea ice cover at both poles has pushed global sea ice cover to an all-time minimum."
