Super excited to announce the release of Hyper 8 Video System 0.18 today!

Hyper 8 is a static site generator for video publishing, and this first release of 2025 introduces major new features and developments:

Video embeds, Platform integration (link previews and timeline video embeds), Windows support (including an official installer), as well as a number of new options, improvements and fixes throughout!

For a short video teaser check out simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/emb

For all changes see codeberg.org/simonrepp/hyper8/

For downloads and more information visit the website at simonrepp.com/hyper8

This release is not just the first in 2025, but also marks the first of an ongoing series of major developments that will occur all throughout this year, funded through a netidee.at grant by the austrian Internet Foundation - thank you so much for making this possible!

Also, this project receives plenty of support from kind people in the community who believe in the mission, spread the word, provide input etc. - thank you so much! - and this time around I'd like to specifically mention @lislegaard and @walterebert who have provided feedback that made its way into this release one way or another (and will yet continue to do so in future ones) - cheers!

Is any one looking into / thinking about publishing static site content via #activitypub , as @mapache has described in:
maho.dev/2024/11/a-guide-to-im

- but utilising @fedify ?

Content from static site generators like #faircamp and #hyper8 by @freebliss is easy to host, long term, but while one would be inclined to host more dynamic services, it would be great to have a kind of (general purpose) layer that could pick up newly published, static content and notify the #fediverse

Spent the afternoon yesterday diagnosing and fixing apple-specific issues in #faircamp and #hyper8 (I can confirm that indeed "iOS/Safari is the new internet explorer" :/)

Among other things I managed to fix one long-standing issue around unintentional concurrent playback in Safari, if anyone wants to test the outcome, this thread has all the information and a live test page: codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircam

Lots of love to the street game conspiracy HQ for providing access to test devices for these sessions, couldn't do it without! <3

:unacceptable:

File system paths look a bit funny in the graphical user interface of the editor (haven't looked into it yet), but otherwise it seems to work!! (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚ #hyper8

I'll officially publish the installer with the upcoming 0.18 (which is btw. shaping up nicely :)) - probably coming in march!

If time permits I'd like to explore a new take on video embedding for #hyper8 - something I'm currently thinking of as "exbedding" (exporting+embedding). Instead of a normal embed (iframe html code you put onto site B that pulls in the assets from site A), you (probably only/primarly as the operator of site A itself) can ask Hyper 8 for a stand-alone exbed bundle of html+assets (e.g. as a zip or directly written to a target directory) that you can then put onto site B, just as you would have done with the regular embed, but with the difference that all the assets live on site B as well, making the embed/exbed independent of site A.

Obviously this has its specific implications and usecases, but I can imagine this being quite useful as a companion to regular embeds, again especially from the perspective of wanting to embed/exbed :) one's own media.

Fashionably late, here's my second¹ big announcement for 2025:

Did you see the «Hyper 8 Video System» (simonrepp.com/hyper8), a static site generator for *video* that I beta-released last May?

Last summer I applied for a netidee.at grant - an open source funding programme by the austrian Internet Foundation - to ensure further #hyper8 development, and to my great delight, the application was accepted!

Hence, all throughout 2025 I'll be able to work part-time on turning Hyper 8 from a pretty solid beta into a full-featured production tool!

The plan in a nutshell: Initially I'll work on critical features like subtitle support, RSS/Podcast integration, video embedding and built-in FTP deployment, midway I'll put additional focus on layout, accessibility and design, and in the grand finale Hyper 8 will be published as a proper desktop application – emphasis though that *right now* you can already use the Hyper 8 graphical user interface! The desktop application is just the missing glue to make this easier to access for everyone.

I'll provide regular updates here on the fediverse, via newsletter (simonrepp.com/newsletter/) and I'll occasionally blog about this in german at netidee.at/hyper-8-video-syste too.

A thousand thanks to netidee for making this possible! <3

I loved this presentation that showcases #faircamp and #Hyper8 for use with audiovisual archives: "Independent, accessible and sustainable audiovisual publishing on the web" by @freebliss at #nttw8 youtube.com/watch?v=frScvn5QqL

As a rabid consumer of music and bandcamp-only streamer, I've been interested in checking out faircamp for a while. But now I have both professional AND personal reasons to do it. Thank you Simon for presenting your incredible work in this space!

Today 4x good news for the other static site generator I'm working on (the one that does "statically generated Youtube" :)) - Hyper 8 Video System!

I) Yesterday I released version 0.17.1, which contains a critical-ish metadata computation bugfix created in collaboration with @lislegaard, a usability tweak contributed by @walterebert making inline video playback the default on iOS systems, and for good measure an update of all rust dependencies. Thanks everyone!

II) Then, I'm delighted to announce that the dérive video archive - which is the collaborative endeavour we went on to turn #hyper8 from a tech fantasy to a concrete project around an actual video archive usecase - is now finally online, and growing: video.derive.at/

III) Also, Judith from the expanded dérive/urbanize team recently visited me to record a very short interview clip in which I talk about Hyper 8. If you understand some german, here's the link to that: instagram.com/derive_urbanize/ (insta, brace yourself (ノ*°▽°*))

IV) Finally, from Sept 11-13 the No Time To Wait conference is happening in Karlsruhe mediaarea.net/NoTimeToWait8 (@nttw). It's a very interesting mix around open media, open standards, and digital audiovisual preservation topics, and this year's edition will very likely include some Hyper 8 (and faircamp) content. ;)

That's all! o/

Hyper 8 Video System (a static site generator for video pages) version 0.17.0 is out now!

What's new: Thanks to @meljoann and @walterebert a critical playback issue on older Safari browsers was resolved, video pages can now be created from the editor without adding the video itself right away, sorting on collection pages now works as intended (thanks @lislegaard for the intel), posters are now computed at native video resolution, and lastly besides a handful smaller things not mentioned¹, the --build option is now functional (again), meaning you can use Hyper 8 to build your site without the graphical editor not just conceptually speaking, but for real! \o/

If you're interested in using Hyper 8 from the terminal alone, I recorded a ~9min video explaining the process:
simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/wit

Complementary to the now available CLI usage I've also extended the docs: simonrepp.com/hyper8/docs/ - the examples for a single video and playlist site are now complete and the reference mentions many more options.

That's all, thanks everyone for your support! (˶′◡‵˶) #hyper8

Excellent excellent news for everyone on macOS that's interested in giving the Hyper 8 Video System a spin:

You can now install #hyper8 through homebrew! - see simonrepp.com/hyper8/docs/inst

Big thanks to @lislegaard for testing the formula(e) (and nudging the endeavour)!

One more thing to celebrate: Kristoffer jumped right into setting up a hyper8-generated video site yesterday and you can already check it out at kristofferlislegaard.com/video That marks the first official hyper8 publication (that I didn't have a hand in :)). Rejoice! \o/

It's been barely a week since the last #hyper8 release, but hey here's a new one already! :)

0.16.0 adds an "offline" setting to mark videos, playlists, and collections as not-for-deployment, configurable video order for collections, inheritance of visibility (unlisted/offline) indication in the editor and built site, three new themes, and some other tweaks and fixes.

Changes are also shown in video form here - simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/wha (it's a Hyper 8 demo site, coincidentally) - and in full detail in the changelog: codeberg.org/simonrepp/hyper8/

That's all, thanks everyone for your support! (⌒‿⌒)

Today the third beta for Hyper 8 Video System (0.15.0) was released!

This release boasts no overly flashy feature additions, but is filled to the brim with improvements and fixes for the editor, especially adding ergonomic changes that make working with #hyper8 much smoother, productive and more fun.

For a 4 minute video walkthrough of the bigger changes see simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/thi, and for all 26 notable changes in detail see the changelog at codeberg.org/simonrepp/hyper8/

For this one again a shout-out to @dried, who provided insights and support for two issues adressed in the release - cheers!

Back in march I released the first teaser video showcasing the Hyper 8 alpha (already using Hyper 8 back then, with full-on trash aesthetics) :D Today I repeated the exercise using the latest beta develpoment version (pre-0.15.0), this time producing two videos - one polished tour (8 minutes), and one where I just haphazardly go through everything the tour does not show (10 minutes).

The "Hyper 8 in eight minutes" tour: simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/tou

The "Complementary ramblings to the tour": simonrepp.com/video/hyper8/add

While everything is still a bit rough around the edges (every single time I productively use Hyper 8 results in me patching at least one small or critical thing I notice (ノ*°▽°*)), I'm also more sold than ever on the whole endeavour ... the authoring system (videos/playlists/collections), the hybrid editing model (browser interface/file system), the internal architecture, everything just pans out so far!! Today the second beta for Hyper 8 - a static site generator for video - was released! \o/

This new version (0.14.0) most notably adds better hierarchical presentation of collections on your site and new, comprehensive options for playlist ordering (manual/release date/title). Also included are a number of changes to improve editor interface readability and a dozen, also critical, bugfixes.¹

Many thanks go to @dried and @smdove who both provided excellent bugreports and insights to make some of the changes in this release happen!

Speaking of release - if anyone of you feels like maintaining a homebrew package for hyper8 (I think some macOS folks would be very grateful to see that happen!), I can set you up with a pretty much ready to go brew formula, it just needs someone willing to become its caretaker. ;)

Continued thread

Development of the Hyper 8 Video System is actually bootstrapped onto a video publishing project (we're getting a first version of the derive.at video archive online, independent from big tech \o/). This week I picked up the first batch of release-ready footage and started using #hyper8 itself for transcoding the final files, so I'm now also iterating on the usability of that whole workflow.

Most recent additions are a more useful dashboard for tracking the background encoding jobs, webm support and overall more robust video metadata handling, and just today I added frame rate parsing and encoding settings (because I needed to convert from 60 to 30 fps).

Next on that front I want to attempt a proof of concept for providing some kind of continuous feedback from the encoding jobs, i.e. just plain redirecting some of ffmpeg's stdout/stderr to the editor - no promises yet though, need to do some exploratory coding first. :D

Official beta release is coming up in ... *checks notes* ... less than four weeks now! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
