KeePassXC Snap App Finally Supports Web Browser Integration

The KeepassXC snap package now “just works” with web browsers, with the latest update adding support for native messaging using secure desktop portals. KeePassXC is a cross-platform, open-source password manager billed as a ‘community-driven port of the Windows application ‘Keepass Password Safe'”. It supports Linux (including CLI), and a snap package has been available since 2017. But until now users who installed the snap to leverage the browser integration (be it auto-fill of usernames and passwords on websites they visit, or saving credentials for new accounts they create) have needed to use a workaround involving an external script. Having trouble getting on top of all the @buttercup work I’d like to get done. Can’t even seem to get the maintenance to a point I like. Not enough contribution, and not enough time on my side. Need to try something different.

I want to release the server-based platforms for Buttercup but they take time away from just maintaining everything. I think moving everything into a monorepo and sharing the maintenance load would be a good idea. The platform needs a more concise UI and now’s probably the time to do it. There are enough daily users that it’d be a good idea I think.

There’s a lot of feature requests like passkeys etc but I’m honestly lacking motivation to dive into them at the moment. Such things came easier when I was sharing the load.

If anyone wants to chat password management, and potentially join the team, please reach out! There’s a lot on offer and there’s still greenfield work to do.. I just need more hands 😁

I'm still trying to figure out the best advice for #PasswordManagement at my work. We're #Microsoft365 based, but Education edition.

Ideally I'd like something which is browser independent, connects to the user's 365 account, and works on mobile as well as desktop. And which doesn't need admin privileges to install.

Microsoft seem to have a "Defender" product for password management, but only for 365 Personal and Family. 365 Business users are told to use Edge.

I'm genuinely boggled that this isn't a standard offering these days. #InfoSec #Passwords

Moin!

We’re looking for help maintaining our Google Drive integration, primarily on desktop. As Google continues to change requirements and guidance on using their APIs, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that we can’t keep up. At least not with maintaining their integration and pushing Buttercup forward at the same time.

If you’re comfortable developing with React/Electron/NodeJS and would be interested in helping out a FOSS product such as ours, please reach out. We’d be very grateful.
