Yesterday, the people of #Ecuador made history! In an exceptional referendum 58% of them voted #SÍalYasuní – to end oil drilling in #Yasuní National Park and instead protect the forest and its people! 💚

“Finally, we are going to kick oil companies out of our territory! This is a major victory for all #Indigenous peoples, for the animals, the plants, the spirits of the forest and our #climate,” says indigenous activist Nemonte Nenquimo in this article: theguardian.com/world/2023/aug

Three days before, she explained the importance, history and uniqueness of the referendum in this op-ed: theguardian.com/commentisfree/

Local communities around the world have a right to decide what happens on their lands and defend it against the interests of corporate greed. The people of Ecuador are now exercising this right. They are a shining example for the rest of us. It's up to them to ensure their governement obeys the vote. It's up to us to make sure that our governements and western #oil companies don't get in their way!

It looks like #YesToYasuni #SiAlYasuni has won on the #Ecuador referendum! #EndFossilFuels

"Ecuador’s landmark decision gives us all hope. It’s possible to say no to the oil giants who are wrecking our planet. Indigenous communities in Ecuador have tirelessly campaigned for this for more than a decade and that effort built the widespread support across the nation that delivered this verdict."

The GuardianJust stop oil? In Ecuador we have the opportunity to do just thatBy Nemonte Nenquimo
Continued thread

Our sacred territories are the inheritance of our grandparents and parents, and as Indigenous youth, we want to pass on that legacy to our children and #FutureGenerations. We want our medicines and our healthy foods to be here for those who come after us.

That's why we are here, and that's why we must unite. We all have legacies to protect and a world to defend.

In unity,
Nixon
