I really want to have a chat app where I can have 3 tiers of connections for both 1:1 chats and groups, and have a simple control to toggle from receiving messages from all 3, to just 2, or just 1.

Different people might use it different ways, by my tiers would be;
1) critical: My elderly parents, my daughter, and a few other family and close friends who always have my ear
2) family and friends: basically people who are part of my social life I'm generally happy to hear from
3) work: people I work with or predominantly talk to about worky stuff. No offence to anyone, but I'd like to be able to be 'away' for these people when I'm off the clock and relaxing

@Blort@social.tchncs.deI have something similar set up. Tier 1 people are all family that I have using Element+Matrix on my home account. Tier 2 people all have my email. Tier 3 text / call me. I have strict "Do not distrub" rules set up on my phone to limit notifications of tier 2+3. Family also know they can email me with low urgency stuff like links to articles.
