Europe might not have "digital giants", but in my living memory (I first became curious about tech as a young boy in late 1970s) it has had a tech industry that operates independently of that of the USA, there are still a lot of *useful* things (embedded systems, SCADA, alarm and signalling equipment etc) are made here that work outside of the surveillance tech ecosystem, often overlooked by tech press as they are taken for granted and not "cool"?
