@gardening @homegrownfood And for those who think this is late for sowing, you're absolutely right. I had to focus all my attention on my Habaneros and UFO chillies in the first weeks of the year, since I overwintered them successfully.

Now is the perfect time for the new ones, and they will be just fine as they can move to a community greenhouse in a couple of weeks.

Aww, they are just the cutest! I love watching them grow! 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This season I also started with new chilli pepper seeds, and I can't wait to see them develop.

I sowed the seeds two weeks ago, and I'm thrilled to see the first young leaves of the lemon drop and the black heart appearing. The pasilla seeds are a bit quiet for now, but I'm sure they'll sprout soon too!

Chilli Survivors 🌶️
Tried to overwinter my chilli plants this year—kind of a test run. I left one group outside (winters are usually mild here) and brought another group indoors. Sadly, the outdoor ones didn’t make it, but 8 out of 13 indoor plants are thriving with new leaves already! 🌱

Lessons learned:
-Keep them indoors.
-A sunny spot is best.
-Pruning is totally fine.
-Check for pests regularly.

Almost forgot to do a Friday (OK, Saturday early hours) #HotFridge check.

I'm a bit confused as I thought I did a Thursday one, but I don't see a record of it here... I'll do a re-org of the little pots tomorrow and if there's a diff between what's on the grow light shelf and what's documented here I'll fill that in... (as this thread has become my primary record of chilli germination lol).

Just now moved from #HotFridge to #GrowShelf we have:

1x Naga Morich (yay!) - X2 (1 pot)
1x BB Mama - X6 (1 pot)
2x Bishop's Crown - X10 (1 pot)
1x Rocoto Marlene - Y1 (1 pot)
1x KangStarr Sweet QueenHi - Y9 (1 pot)
2x KanStarr Lingria - Y10 (1 pot)
3x Chilli Chump Piri Piri - Y12 (2 post)

Next day, EVEN M04R CH1ll13Z!!

Also super-chuffed that my 7 Pot Primos have germinated so soon! These can be a bastard to germinate. Turns out my "abuse" of them leaving on a wet tissue for over a week after the chamomile soak hasn't done any harm. They hadn't sprouted yet when I planted them but they were clearly close. No doubt the 28C of the #HotFridge did the rest, and *boom*... under 2 days later we have 3 or 4 up and out of the soil.

Today's additions to the #GrowShelf:

3x 7 Pot Primo (X1)
3x Kashmiri Mirch (Y3)
3x Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry (Y4)
4x Biquinho Red (Y6)
3x Thunder Mountain Longhorn (Y7)
2x KangStarr StarrLing (Y8)
1x Beaver Dam (Y11)
4x Chilli Chump Piri Piri (Y12)

First #chillies have graduated from the #HotFridge to the #GrowShelf ... speedy!

I take them out when at least one seedling in a pot has both cotyledons well open. The goal is for one strong seedling per pot. Though I may consider pricking out one of the two to another pot if another pot fails or I want more of that plant.

Here we have:

2x Aji Mango (X8) <-edit
3x Sugar Rush Stripey (X13)
4x Trinidad Perfume (X4)
3x Tangerine Tiger (X12)
3x Chilli Chump Jalapeño (X14)
3x Scotch Bonnet (X5)
3x Madre Veija (X11)

104 seeds, 52 little pots, 28 varieties - that's the #chillies in the #HotFridge...

Some I popped in on Thursday evening have popped up already - these were somewhat pre-sprouted on wet paper.

Next up will be the eggplant and capsicum seeds.

I'll wait until second half of Feb for the tomatoes and similar.

A bit of a delayed sowing for the #chillies, but it's still January! Plus these seeds got a head start, too much so in some cases perhaps. Hopefully they'll be OK.

Compost is seived and microwaved to 70°C and then needs to cool.

And this is round-2 of the #chillies into their chamomile bath. The first round are actually currently sat under a cover on damp paper towel as I've not had time to get them into pots yet, generally this is fine, you can actually germinate them this way and plant only those that germinate - I've seen some folks do it this way.

I'll make the time tomorrow hopefully, I'm up against some strong alternative priorities right now.

Anyway, round-2 is in for their chamomile soak. ANOTHER 14 varieties... I've gone mad... 28 varieties this year? Bonkers. REALLY need to get that greenhouse finished at the #allotment!

01 Rocoto Marlene
02 Rocoto Costa Rica
03 Kashmiri Mirch
04 Candy Cane Choc Cherry
05 Yaki Blue
06 Biquinho Red
07 Thunder Mountain Longhorn
08 KS StarrLing
09 KS Sweet QueenHi
10 KS Lingria
11 Beaver Dam
12 CC Piri Piri
13 Biquinho Yellow
14 Padrons

Postal excitement!

I wasn't going to be buying any more chilli seeds this year, but I cannot find any rocoto seeds and its a variety I really want to grow again. So I fired an order into the Chilli Chump Seeds shop: chillichumpseeds.com/

Of course one does not just buy ONE packet of seeds lol... so two rocoto varieties, some Kashmiri Mirch, and a couple of interesting purple/multi-shade varieties in both the mild and quite-hot departments.

Plus the bonus/freebie Khang Starr variety: KS StarrLing

Survival Mode On! 🌱

Looking at my chili plants, I can totally feel the "survive mode." After pruning them, I'm hoping they’ll save enough energy to come back stronger next year.

Kinda feels like me right now. I've blocked out everything that's not essential until the end of the year so I can focus on finishing some writing. 📝✨

This chili plant looks pretty sad right now and probably won’t make it through the winter.

I'm hoping a few can make it inside. Fingers crossed that most of them survive until our community greenhouse is ready! 🤞

And just in case none of my chilies make it, I’ve got plenty of seeds (Habanero & Ufo), plus a new one: Lemon Drop! Can’t wait to try these – they’re so delicious!
