@dbat That's a good question, too, that I cannot readily answer.

I started studying #ComputationalLinguistics (#CompLing) in 2018, way before that whole #AI thing overtook the entire field and reduced all of our previous work to irrelevancy (which I am very angry about).

My degree is where I got most of my knowledge about the technology from – our field outright invented LLMs, and I work on language-related machine learning, too.

@bpaassen For what it's worth, it's something that even a lot of us students are concerned about, at least among my local #CompLing peers.

We keep reading statements in "reputable" publishings that even to our Bachelor's degree eyes are clearly unsourced conjecture and scientifically speaking utter nonsense.

Offensively unsourced sentences like "over the last years, LLMs have developed a deep and intuitive understanding of human culture" really make me worried for the future of our field.

🇬🇧 Hey there!

I'm #newHere at the Localization Café. ☕

I have been working as a freelancer for some time, translating and localising what mostly ends up being #videoGames. My language pair is #English and #German.

Outside my #freelancing work, I am a #linguistics and #compLing student who is currently finishing up my dual degree.

In the future I would like to work as an in-house localisation worker in the #gaming industry; fingers crossed, since #gamedev is a difficult field to get into! :)

I entered the #ComputationalLinguistics field in 2018 by enrolling for a Bachelor's degree.

Since then, a lot has changed. Almost all the things we learned about, programmed in practice and did research on are now nearly irrelevant in our day-to-day.

Everything is #LLMs now. Every paper, every course, every student project.

And the newly enrolled students changed, too. They're no longer language nerds, they're #AI bros.

I miss #CompLing before ChatGPT.

Ab jetzt exklusiv #neuhier auf Mastodon.

I can't help but feel dirty when attending my #compling classes.

We're enthusiastically toying with LLMs and text-to-image generators from an excited, academic standpoint. The technology is REALLY impressive and my linguist heart is blooming.

I obviously keep having to think about the environmental and social impact of so-called "AI". I am in academia, not some corporation. Am I a bad person for studying this?

When I started in #ComputationalLinguistics / #NLProc, some of the stuff with word embeddings and topic modeling felt like kind of a stretch re: what we could do with language models, but at least the formalisms were interesting and it felt like there was an effort to treat it as exploratory and not "hey language models understand language!" Now it feels like the field has been co-opted by all the #MathyMaths and #TESCREAL bullshit, and I so desperately want to get back to real #CompLing

An #introduction to you lovely people here in #mastodon is long overdue now:
I'm currently a #PhD candidate, research assistant, and associate lecturer at #LancasterUniversity.
I love all things #corpuslinguistics, #stats, and interpretable #CompLing.
I'm passionate about developing new, explainable methodologies and workflows so we can analyse (existing) linguistic data in new ways and further our understanding of language 🗣️ and the mind 🧠

#Introduction with #Hashtags

#Hi, I work on #ComputationalLinguistics (#CompLing): I develop models of human #LanguageLearning and #LanguageUse, and I test them on #RealWorldData. One focus of my work has been on #Lexical #Semantics, looking at how a word's #Meaning can be learnt from #Context, and indeed what kind of #MeaningRepresentation to use in the first place. This work is #Interdisciplinary, drawing on #Linguistics #PhilosophyOfLanguage #CognitiveScience #MachineLearning
