So I found the magic incantation to put my Radioditty DB20-G, 20 watt GMRS mobile, into an alternate mode that allows me to transmit on 2 meters. Now all I need to do is hack a digirig cable together and I’m ready to up my solar APRS setup from 8watts to 20.

I got a request on Monday from our #hamradio friends in Luxembourg. The @LuxTecSchool was planing a Balloon mission for today (during the #eclipse) but didnt had a sufficent tracker device. Luckily I had enough parts to build a tracker and a small base station and some antennas for Lora #aprs on 433MHz. Now, mission accomplished. Payload recovered :-)
Very good job from the Students at Luxembourg Tech School #lts

So a 100% solar powered APRS Digipeater is totally feasible with a Raspberry Pi Zero W. It uses very little power. I do recommend setting Direwolf to use a sample rate of 22050 (direwolf -r 220250) or else you will get choppy audio, at least with a Digirig mobile.

I'm still not happy with my meager 8 watts of power. That's next on the list of things to fix.

Ach guck an. db0end konnte ich einmal kurz auftasten und rufen. 2-3mm bewegt und das Relais war unerreichbar. Aber ein einziges #APRS Paket hat die Hytera dann doch noch absetzen können. RSSI -105. Ist da also sogar mit S7 angekommen. Nice.

Gut, im Notfall könnte dieses eine Paket halt ein leben retten. Schließlich war ich ja im Wald. Und im Wald da sind die Räuber,
halli hallo die Räuber……

Setting up a solar powered APRS digipeater. So far the only snag is having to compile Direwolf on the Raspberry Pi Zero W I’m using because the precompiled ARM binaries have some unsupported instructions. The compile is SLOW on a single core RPI zero.
