I have found that all of the "solutions" I've looked at are just locking you into some more specific ecosystem, so went back to the revolutionary idea of using the #filesystem I have my photos and videos in a folder structure on my laptop by year, trip.

I don't auto backup from my #iPhone or #Sonya6700 anymore, that really just synced a load of cruft I had to delete, or pay to store. I move photos I want to my laptop, where I adjust and edit them in #darktable / #rawtherapee / #digikam

@norberteder DarkTable und #RawTherapee bzw. #Art sind zwar hervorragende und mächtige Werkzeuge, aber für mich hat das für die normale Alltagsarbeit eher was von Kanonen auf Spatzen und so. Ich nehme sie gern, aber nur sehr selten zur Hand.

Ich habe mich an die Arbeit mit #digiKam gewöhnt. Ist man bereit, sich einzuarbeiten, hat man alles, um sein Archiv vernünftig zu organisieren, plus einige treue Helferlein wie den Bildeditor mit seinen PlugIns/Modulen. Für nicht zu aufwändige, schnelle Korrekturen brauchts nicht viel mehr, so dass ich nicht mehr "für jeden Kleinkram" auf #GIMP zurückgreifen muss. Und mit #LibRaw (Voreinstellung beim Rohdatenimport) lassen sich direkt aus digiKam heraus schnell und einfach Rohbilder entwickeln. Unterwegs auf dem Laptop nutze ich das gerne mal.

Adobe-Produkte habe ich noch nie gebraucht. Selbst damals, als ich noch WindowsXP (haha, wie die Zeit verrinnt! 😊) auf einer Partition neben Linux laufen hatte, habe ich lieber digiKam & Co. genutzt.

Zwar hatte ich irgendeine damalige Photoshop-Version zuhause, genutzt habe ich die jedoch nie. Sorry, welche PS-Version PS das damals gewesen sein mag, kann ich nicht mehr erinnern - ich habe es schlicht und einfach nicht gebraucht. :smile:

Ich bin überzeugt: Fotoverwaltungssoftware sollte Metadaten immer direkt in den Bilddateien speichern – plattform- und softwareübergreifend nutzbar.

Ob Gesichterkennung, Beschreibungstext, Kategorien oder manuelle Tags – all diese Infos gehören nicht nur in eine Datenbank, sondern auch als Metadaten direkt ins #Bild (EXIF/XMP/IPTC etc.).

Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre zwei Programme intensiver genutzt:
Damals unter Windows: #Picasa (RIP). Heute unter Linux: #Digikam.
Jetzt überlege ich, auf eine serverbasierte Lösung umzusteigen – aber immer bleibt dieselbe Frage:
Wie #portabel sind meine Daten, wenn die Software ausfällt oder ich wechseln will?

Eine Metadatenstrategie, die auf offene Standards setzt, erleichtert Backups, Migration, parallele Nutzung und langfristige Verfügbarkeit.

Wie seht ihr das?

digiKam 8.6.0 is released - digikam.org/news/2025-03-15-8.

Hier verwende ich die Bilddatenbank "digiKam" seit einiger Zeit testweise als Alternative für ein kommerzielles System und bin sehr zufrieden. Mit den wenigen Einschränkungen kann ich ganz gut leben und bin auf dem Sprung, den Wechsel zu "digiKam" ganz zu vollziehen.

I could not decide which of those photos I am going to process and post here.

Instead I procrastinated and started another project:
I am currently using Excire Foto as a digital asset manager. Running on Win10. With Win11 coming - which I would really hate to use - I installed digiKam. I wanted to see if I can survive without Windows.
Comparing Excire to digiKam so far showed a better performance for Exire. Ok, yet I have to setup an Linux maschine to test digiKam in its native habitat.

And to make it clear - I have no aversion to paying for software - If I could buy Excire for Linux.
Same goes for Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher. This will be another post.
