@JessTheUnstill @Mojeek and now you know why I have a 10+ year old stupid 1080p TV and will only replace it with a monitor if it ever dies...

  • I want my shit stupid because I want my tools to obey me.

Same with my car: I'll never drive a car made after 2016 because of all the #eCall #tracking bs that doesn't even work reliably in #EDGEland when it comes to emergencies!

  • Not to mention having driven a #Peugeot 2008 not so long ago (as rental) really fucking annoyed me as this thing just decided to randomly nag me for the gazillionth time to agree to shit terms I explicitly declined several times already whilst driving down the road, literally blocking the navigation display.

#Enshittification like that will sooner or later kill people!

  • But hey, at least it refused to pair a passengers' phone via bluetooth if I didn't pull over and turned the engine off! That'll shurely not make other drivers just keep their hands on the handset against Traffic Code...
Peugeot 2008 Infotainment system randomly demanding location data and internet access for a voice assistant randombly on the road.

The only selection options are "Accept" and "Abort" (not "Decline"]…

It a fullscreen popup that this blocks readability of the navigation system and thus directions...
Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)Attached: 1 image RANT: Yet another reason why I'll never buy a new car in my life - I had a rental (#Peugeot2008) which is one of these garbage *"#Crossover" / #SuperUselessVehicles* that are *PHAT* outside but crammed af inside due to a needlessly *W I D E* center console and barely adjustable driver seat and steering wheel. - This car is basically impossible to reverse without staring at it's backup camera as it has a giant-ass deadzone behind it. - It's shitty front allows children to hide even easier than the rear and makes parking even more stressful But what made my blood boil is the obnoxiousness with which it's shitty tablet decided to randomly (!), whilst driving >50km/h to just pop up a demand for #tracking bs, offering only "allow" and "later" instead of a "no thanks" / "don't ask me again" option. - Shit like this can literally *kill* people as they fiddle around trying to dismiss it. - I had it pop up 2x (!) within 5 mins (!!) on the same (!!!) trip [not pulling ignition key!] And at the 2nd time decided to pull over to document this shit. This kind of #Enshittification in the form of a #Car comitting an *"Exhaustion Attack"* against it's *own driver* needs to be outlawed, not mandated! @snep espechally on mobile!

OFC it won't make shit go faster, but more reliable.

  • #latency is shit on all mobile networks that ain't straight-up #IP-based like #WiFi, Tor doesn't add that much to it...

In fact, Tor makes #throttled connections bearable for me for >15 years, as even back in 2008 one couldn't just get "unlimited data", espechally not as an individual (school child) without income or wealth!

Continued thread

Issues aside it's now 15 years since I started using #Tor / @torproject & @guardianproject / #Orbot on #Android full-time.

Because in #EDGEland they yeet users to 64kBit/s if not even lower to 16kBit/s past paid bandwith and instead of properly renegotiating the bandwith, they trottle connections by reducing the packet rate / dropping packets, making it as #laggy as a #GSO-based #SATCOM connection!

  • On top of that, almost all #MNO|s & #MVNO|s illegally use RFC1918 Address space, *espechally 10.0.0.0/8 for #CGNAT, thus bricking #VPN|s and sadly @BNetzA doesn't really give a damn!

@tauon Also what goid is an encryption like @signalapp is you don't have #SelfCustody of all the keys?

  • Shure you could disable encryption but @monocles shows you when it's active and when not and comes with sensible defaults like having #OMEMO active per default...

I can setup over a dozen #TechIlliterates 1:1 with #XMPP accounts and #monoclesChat & @gajim / #gajim in the time it takes me to get a #nonKYC #eSIM from overseas with a phone number as mandated by @signalapp and maintaining that number for #Signal will easily cost like $2,50 p.m. at minimum.

  • Whereas a Data-only eSIM is way faster and cheaper to get and maintain.

In fact even legitimately acquiring and registering a #Prepaid #SIM in-store in #Germany takes longer than setting up #Fdroid & monocles chat & a XMPP account whilst on throttled #EDGEland speeds...

Possum City🌸 lily 🏳️‍⚧️ :flag_pansexual: :flag_ace: θΔ ⋐ & ∞ (@tauon)@kkarhan@infosec.space > centralised tbh i agree, i don't like that signal is centralised, but that isn't insecure, it's just an anti-feature > proprietary no it isn't, every element of signal is open source > subject to cloud act what is that? are you talking about subpoenaing of information? they legally have to do that anyway, and can't give anything except for the account creation date and the date that the account was last accessed > collects pii like phone numbers i'm pretty sure they don't signal is more secure than anything you've mentioned because on signal, encryption is not optional. any service where encryption is optional is not secure. RE: @tauon@possum.city no, it is not because it is a #Centralized, #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solution subject to #CloudAct that collects #PII like #PhoneNumbers, which makes it inherently less secure, as they are able and willing to restrict access as they please. RE: ...

@lucasmz @Avitus @david_chisnall the benefit of #XMPP+#OMEMO is that there are several providers, including free options...

All #PII incl. #PhoneNumbers can and will be abused by existing governments and if users don't pay, then they are the product and their data is the one to be sold.

After all, you have the same cost problem with phone numbers. Even if one doesn't pay per line/number and never pay for calls and texts, they still have to top it up to extent validity.

  • And again: It's way easier for a government to demand an ID for a #SIM that works in networks around their country (i.e. #Turkey demands registration on a per-#IMEI - basis *with #ID) than to tunnel XMPP+OMEMO through @torproject over #EDGEland-speed #2G networks.

Plus you relying an unfixably insecure #Telephony makes a system inherently unsafer than it needs to be...

  • This is how people get caught!

Also #Signal is able and willing to use said PII to restrict and ban users and if I were some dissident in Cuba or North Korea or even just Eritrea or Yemen I'd not rely on non-enforcement of #OFAC / #USML / #ITAR since Signal can obviously distinguish & identify accounts by virgue if their #PhoneNumber!

  • Always think "How can this be weaponized against someone?" when it comes to #privacy!

@Ultralativ hat recht:

Why?

OFC since #Opera #Mini needs a trustworthy proxy backend any "#clone" would need an #OpenSource'd & #SelfHosting-capable #backend (similar to @ActionRetro 's #FrogFind .com as it breaks #E2EE.

Needless to say it would be a godsent for anyone stuck on #EDGEland and slower speeds (i.e. #SATCOM like #Iridium)...

@Melissabeartrix @Tattooed_mummy I see #AltText & #ImageDescription as both a necessary work and opportunity to #DoBetter...

  • Yes it'll cost me time and slow me down #shitposting or whatever but I do also oftentimes interact with the #Fediverse on #Narrowband (cuz #EDGEland) and I'm glad I can still use it on my mobile at #throttled #2G speeds.

  • Also I do have #blind followers and I think it's important to also let them access the conversation - or at least give them the choice to do so.
