After Amazon's news this week,
I feel the need to share this advice from my Privacy Guides article again:

Notify guests if you are
using a smart speaker 🔇

If you are using a smart speaker device in your home such as Amazon's Echo (Alexa), Apple's HomePod (Siri), Google's Nest,

Inform your guests about it when they enter your home ⚠️

These devices have the capacity
to record all conversations, and there has already been instances of accidental privacy invasion reported about this 🔓

Even if you don't mind yourself,
offer your guests to UNPLUG your smart speaker while they are visiting you 🔌

Hey #HomeAssistant gurus, looking for some ideas here. I ditched my Echo devices, and I'm looking to replace them with HA alternatives. Mainly, I just need something Bluetooth- and (preferably) Internet-enabled that I can link Spotify to, and possibly setup a timer, weather service, etc (though those last two aren't as critical).

I've never used HA before, so fire away with any suggestions! Thanks in advance!

Has anyone tried #OpenVoiceOS ? What was your impression if so?

(I'd like to have a #SmartSpeaker-type device, but I don't want Amazon, Google or Microsoft to listen to my home.)

Advice please on getting a #smartspeaker for my mum.
Her #eyesight is deteriorating and things like driving the LG tv by aiming a stupid pointer on the screen are infuriating.
Also just to be able to say "Call…" to make an old-school phone call would be great.
She has an Android phone and an iPad, both are becoming difficult to use.
Pointers welcome on what Apple / Google / Amazon / others can actually do to help my mum.

This #Alexa failing sounds like Google #SmartSpeaker failing about (?) 3 years ago.

I suspected Google switched to using more on-device processing of speech and used less of the remote processing. And the device became useless.

We've since, due to #PrivacyConcerns, and reading that Google executives would not have smart speakers in their own homes, switched off both Alexa and Google. So we've got no current observations to add.
