@piku Def not definitive, but just to get you started:

  • #Floorp atm based on FF 128 ESR vs #ZenBrowser based on FF Release, ie, atm 131.0.3. Note: Floorp Dev, many months ago, indicated they're in the process of rebasing also to Release, but we've not yet seen it.
  • F & Z both have various UI & UX customisations not in FF without manual CSS. Some are similar to each other, others unique.
  • Both offer Vivaldi-esque #WebPanels; F is almost identical, whereas Z WPs are less directly accessible.
  • F allows either horizontal or vertical native tabs; Z is vertical-only.
  • Z Dev is focusing on both form [aesthetics] & function; F is less "pretty".
  • Both provide tabs splitting, but do it differently. IMO both implementations atm still need refinement.
  • #Sidebery works in both, but availing oneself of its many wonders unfortunately compromises some of the important Z & F native functions.

Hello @thelinuxcast, I have a note to the latest episode of your podcast where you talked about @Vivaldi 's tab stacks and workspaces, and not being able to replicate them in #firefox with Simple Tab Groups.
I highly recommend you the Firefox addon called #sidebery.
Unlike Vivaldi, itit can only be vertical, but otherwise it's a lot better IMO. It's extremely customizable, you can have 10 levels of nested tab stacks if you desire so. It has among other's equivalent of Vivaldi's workspaces. It's good out of the box, but I took the time to go through the whole config and I can't live without it ever since. Currently have 500+ tabs open, and I don't have even the slightest feeling of them not being organized. I don't want to list every one of it's cool features here, but there's a LOT.
Try it if you want, and thanks for keeping me entertained with your podcast. o7

@hopland IMO #VerticalTabs are fantastic, & far superior to conventional horizontal tabs. As a #Sidebery devotee, & #TreeStyleTab for some years before that, i welcome #FirefoxNightly's :firefox_nightly: belated entry into this important UI UX step. That said, atm they're of course extremely primitive, & i doubt any current Sidebery user will decide to uninstall it & just use Nightly's current first-step offer.

Of amusement & frustration to me is the typical grumpy negative reactions of the neckbeards in the community forum. My Zarquon they're foolish in their closed-minded obstinacy.

Btw, wrt Sidebery, have you noticed the project afaict has had no new Commits now for over four months? I fear the Dev might have died, become ill, or walked away, though i desperately hope i'm wrong.

I love this project, but confess i'm beginning to worry that maybe it might have died...?

Afaict, it's had no new #commits for more than 3 months (but i admit i'm not terribly good at finding my way around #github).

Does anyone have any "inside info" on whether this project still lives or has died? 🤷‍♀️

@waldyrious @Perhyte @cloudless I was a #TST user for many years, before discovering #Sidebery, so i do know how excellent TST is. IMO though, TST lost its way once the Dev chose to remove much core functionality from it, devolving it all instead to myriad companion AOs the user then also must install. As well, various functions some users wanted were explicitly ruled out by the Dev.

Otoh the Sidebery Dev has been immensely receptive to new ideas, as well as feedback for improving existing features, + ALL the functionality of TST exists within Sidebery's Settings without needing to have any companion AOs. There's so much i like about Sidebery, but just to mention a mere handful of benefits over TST:

  • tab hover preview thumbnails
  • infinite separate Workspaces [called Tab Panels in Sidebery]
  • optional integration in the Sidebery Panel of Closed Tabs, Bookmarks, History [done better than in TST]
  • infinite Session backups & restores
  • really clever context menu options such that many commonplace tab operations can be done "one handed"... you really need to play with this to understand

My reply is inadequate. Much better would be to install the AO, explore its rich Settings, & play with it all.

@msdropbear42 @Perhyte @cloudless as a long-time #TreeStyleTab user, I've seen many people mention that #Sidebery is better, more powerful, etc., but I keep missing out on what exactly are the killer features that make the difference for so many people to have this preference. I'm pretty happy with TST, and suspect that the main things I'm missing are small papercuts and UX tune ups, but maybe there are features I don't know I need? Please enlighten me 😁

Mozilla released a Firefox Nightly test build with vertical tabs

Mozilla released a Firefox Nightly test build recently that includes support for vertical tabs. This new functionality is not available in regular Firefox Nightly builds, but there is a way to get that build and test it for yourself.

Native vertical tabs support is a highly requested feature. It is placed third currently on Mozilla's Connect website, just behind native tab grouping, and the restoration of PWA support in Firefox.

Vertical tabs move tabs from a horizontal bar at the top of the browser to the side. It enables better drag & drop support, sorting, hierarchical views, and better use of space on widescreen monitors or sites that limit their width.

  • I installed this several days ago, alongside my standard Nightly, Floorp & Vivaldi.
  • it's an interesting & encouraging first step
  • atm, being so early in its development, it's terribly primitive compared to Vivaldi, Firefoxes with #TreeStyleTab AO or most especially the brilliant #Sidebery AO.

@Rush If by rewrite you possibly allude to the apparent decision to remove #Workspaces [bwaaaaaah] in a few months, then... fyi:

[oh, also, everything i write about #Floorp refers to the full, aka Stable, version, not the very short-lived & IMO bizarrely ill-advised Lightning version]

I have two profiles [well actually more, but only two are relevant here]:

They both work really well, but i heavily favour the latter, even though it's sad to not use Floorp's native WS, coz IMO once anyone has tasted Sidebery it's impossible to ever walk away from it. The bonus of this schema is that once Floorp's WS officially disappear, it won't damage my workflow given the choice already made, as above.

TLDR; IMO you can't do any harm by already giving Floorp another go now, rather than indefinitely waiting.

@Aaron

I also use #uBlockOrigin [in Hard Mode] & #LibRedirect, with these other priority #AddOns not shown in your pic.

In :floorp: #Floorp:

CanvasBlocker extension 1.9 true
Containerise extension 3.9.0 true
Dark Reader extension 4.9.68 true
Gesturefy extension 3.2.9 true
Livemarks extension 3.6 true
Stylus extension 1.5.37 true
Tree Style Tab extension 3.9.19 true

In :firefox_nightly:#FirefoxNightly i swap #TreeStyleTab for #Sidebery .
